This is an old question, but I'm gonna answer it anyway in case anyone else needs the info.

Normally, you can do a search for "buffalo cd500u2 PCB" on eBay or Amazon and if any are available, they'll show up.

Right now there's none available, but for between $25 - $49 you can just grab a whole used drive and you'll be good to go. .If you grab a whole drive, you can use that PCB to revive your old one and retrieve any data you need, if it's salvageable, and you're back in business, or swap it back and just use the new drive -

Here's the current eBay offerings ($25 for one right now)

Certainly we can help,

This generally means you have a hardware failure in the drive or enclosure. The simplest way to test which is to have a hardware tech move the drive into a new enclosure and see if it works.

This will void your warranty if you do it, so, if the drive is under warranty and there are no files you consider valuable on the drive, call the manufacturer for warranty support.

If you value the data more than the drive is worth then take it to your local hardware vendor and ask them to test the hard drive in a new enclosure. Good odds it will work this way but if not you may need the help of a data recovery specialist.

In North America I use Armor-IT, if you are in a different region and the new enclosure fails to garner results, comment back with your region(Country, State, City) and I will supply you with the closest reputable facility.

SOURCE: I cant format my Buffalo HD-CE500U2. It took time

A few things to check

1. ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer.

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply (Dont use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating eg. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly)

If you checked and fixed anything there then lets see if we can format it ?

Go to your control panel and then administrative tools, select computer management.

Now select Disk Management and expand the window.

Your drive should be listed here (if not then you need to check your computer hardware has not got any issues before proceeding)

If your drive is listed and says healthy then right click on it an select Properties, click tools and then error checking, Check now, tick the two boxes and then start.

This will attempt to fix any errors on the drive. It may also ask you to restart which is fine. Allow it to finish its work or you could corrupt the drive. If all went well you should be able to use it normally again.

If you drive was listed ut did NOT say healthy then right click and select Format. Choose NTFS as the file system and do not tick any boxes you do NOT want quick format. Again start and let it do its thing. when it is done restart your computer and you should be good to go.

Your board numbers should start with LJ92. They will cross to both Samsung and LG. Oh, your model number goes nowhere, double check it.

hi there, if you would like to format it, all you have to do is plug it into the computer, go to my computer, and right click on the drive. Then, click format. After that, click on the format button and let it be for about a hour or two. After it is done, the drive will have been formated.

SOURCE: my buffalo external hard disk

it is a PNP (PlugNplay) device. Try using a different cable to connect to your pc. Should the problem remain, hook it up to a different computer and if it doesn't see the drive, it will be an electronic circuit failure inside the box. The data is still on the hhd but you will have to obtain a new circuit to bring the hhd back online for use.

Driver for HD-PNTU3

This drive showing as not supported for Linux as you mentioned.
Usually this is due to the board inside the enclosure.
You could crack open the case and mount the drive internally which would resolve this issue.
Otherwise you are down to trying to find a driver (not made for this model) that will be recognized by your system.

I can't Open my External Hard Disk Buffalo HD-PXT320U2/W-AP .. How can i solve this problem .. ?? The Interface view I/O Error Device .. Thamls for yOur hElp ..

I/O Error Device means that the pc cannot communicate with your external HDD - either the USB cable is broken (replace it) or its control board has failed. If it's the latter then the Buffalo is dead, get a new one.

I just dropped my buffallo HD-CE500U2-EU and now its making a whirling clicking noise.. wont recognise on my laptop still lights up green though, can i fix this or at least get my files recovered? thanks

Sorry to said that your description comes to a dead hard disk. Especially if the hard disk was at power on state the moment that dropped down there is no doubt that the clicking noise that you hear is a destroyed hard disk.

Sorry for the bad news.

My HD-CE500U2-EU seems to have gone down. It cannot be read and is making a regular clicking sound. It's been fine for the last two years.

A clicking sound from a hard drive means the hard drive has failed (known as the click of death).
If you need to recover data from a faulty hard drive, there are companies that specializes in data recovery from faulty hard drives BUT they will charge you an arm and a leg for their services.

Seems to have died -- the power light is on (green) but can't hear the disk spinning and nothing shows up on the screen.

Good news and bad news.

Bad news is that usually indicates a failure of the hard drive inside the case or the driver electronics. If you don not hear or feel the drive spin up that can mean the drive is dead or may not be getting any power. It requires the external power to run. You can check that with a volt meter. It is possible that the connection or the internal board has failed as well which would also mean the drive itself could be fine.

Some good news is that you can replace the drive with any 500 or even 1tb sized sata type hard drive fairly cheaply. It only takes a few minutes to open the case and replace the drive.

If the case is bad then you can buy a cheap $20 and up usb drive case and out the drive in there and be up and running again. Usually if you shop around you can do this cheaper than buying a new complete unit.
You can also connect the drive to your pc as a second sata drive.

You have a few options here, but those really depend on what went wrong.
