Question about Maxtor Personal Storage 3200 (U01E200) 200 GB Hard Drive

External Hard drive Failure

I Have a Maxtor 3200 300g External Hard drive, i brought it just over a year ago and untill now it has been fantastic but the other night it decided to play up and now i cant get into it without it asking me to format it ?? it had about 270 gig of info on it, i do have most of it backed up but it is just so frustrating. I cant run a Disk Check on it because i get this message, unless im doing it wrong ? ( Disk Check could not be Preformed because windows cannot access disk ) , If i try open it up through my computer is says ( The File or Directory is corrupted an Unreadable ). Has anyone had this problem ? is it fixeble ? do i need a recovery program ?? HEEEEELP

Thanks Guys

Re: External Hard drive Failure

Seems to me like your MFT of FAT is corrupt. You can go ahead and do a format on it by right clicking and going to format. You should then be able to copy your backed-up files back onto the drive.

Hi there we purchased a maxtor basics 500gb hard drive about 3 years ago. we have had children in that time and unfortunetly our two year old daughter dropped it. we have taken it to a service store but...

If it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken then yes. But if it is the hard drive itself that is broken then no.
From what happened I'm thinking that it is the external hard drive enclosure that is broken. That being said, you can easily buy one without the hard drive online. When doing this be sure you know what kind of hard drive is in your Maxtor enclosure. This is important because you need to be sure that your hard drive and enclosure are compatible. Check to see if it uses SATA, ATA, or PATA connectors and then buy the corresponding external hard drive enclosure.
Once you have bought your new empty external hard drive enclosure, it is simply a matter of opening up your Maxtor enclosure and moving the hard drive inside to your newly purchased enclosure and connecting it to your computer.
To avoid problems like this in the future, look into "cloud based storage" to back up all of your data securely online.

My computer cant find my external hard drive

Sounds like the drive isn't working, but the next step is to try it on another computer. If it doesn't show up there either, then the drive is faulty.

My Maxtor External Hard Drive is not working

You need to check it with Norton Utilities. I hope you still have this hard drive (this posting is posted 5 years ago) and it is not dead yet, so you can copy all of the valuable files to your other data storage.

You did well to have it work so long!
It is out of warranty - open it up, remove the drive from the case. It may be a SATA drive, but probably an IDE from 4 years ago...

Just place it in your computer and it should work fine. The most common problem is the controller card for the external connection has failed. so putting it in your computer as a normal drive will either fix it - or tell you that the drive has died.

Maxtor external hard dive

body { background: #FFFFFF; margin: 0px; padding: 4px; font-family: arial, verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 10pt; } p { margin:0px; padding:0px; } .spwrap { background: transparent url(../wysiwyg_rte/misspell.gif) repeat-x scroll center bottom; } This is definitaly the drive itself that is close to or totally gone. You can send it into a data recovery center to have your pics taken off the drive but this can be expenive to do and it may not be possible depending on how the drive failed.
