Jul 07, 2009 - HI, I HAVE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE TASK BELOW, HOWEVER MY D DRIVE IS STILL READING AS CD ROM AND NOT CD/DVD ROM & BOTH NERO AND CD BURNER XP IS NOT RECOGNISING ANY DRIVES TO BURN DISCS TO - I HAVE ALSO TRIED MY STANDALONE FREECOM DRIVE E AND THIS IS NOT RECOGNISED EITHER. I AM ONLY ABLE TO BURN DVD'S USING WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER - AND CANNOT BURN CD'S AT ALL. WHEN I AM PUTTING BLANK DISC IN BOTH DRIVES IT IS RECOGNISING THEM HOWEVER THE APPLICATIONS ARE NOT? HELP!?

Just perform this
1) Close all open programs
2) Click on Start, Run, and type REGEDIT and press Enter
3) Click on the plus signs (+) next to the following folders
* HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
* SYSTEM
* CurrentControlSet
* Control
* Class

If not reseat the drive once and check- that should work,
Or if you have a known good drive, swap the drive with this unit and check.
If the new Drive works fine, the opticle drive of this unit must be gone bad.
