Re: GE electric dyer cord

You must change the cord on the dryer. New house constuction electrical code requires a 4 prong receptical (double grounded).
You can buy a cord at Lowes, Home depo, Sears, etc. When you install the new cord there is a brass strap from the neutral post to the dryer cabinet that you must remove. The extra green wire in the cord connects to the cabinet. Your old cord probably won't be color coded, but the new one will be. Red is hot, goes on the end post, (doesn't matter whichn end). white is neutral and goes on the middle post. black is hot & goes on the other end post.& green goes to the cabinet.

We just bought a Mini Plus B31 coffeemaker and the cord will not plug into a standard three prong outlet. Other appliance cords do plug into the same outlets.

if you have a four pin plug, check that it is not three phase for heavy electrical use. ask your electrical supplier if your house has three phase, if your house had electric storage heating there is a chance it had three phase to balance the electrical supply to the property this can be dangerous so check please (some old boilers were two or three phase years ago)

Need to change power cord on maytag dryer from 3 prong to 4

Always disconnect electricity before beginning this process.

All the 4 wire cords I have seen are color-coded. The white wire goes to the middle terminal, the green wire goes to any screw you can reach that goes into the metal case of the dyer. The red and black go to the outside terminals of the block and while it doesn't matter which color goes to which terminal I usually follow the color code of the interior dryer wiring that already exists. Good Luck.

I moved to a house with a three prong outlet for my Frigidare electric dryer, model number FER341AC0, that has a four prong cord. I bought a new three prong cord but there is no color coding on the dryer...

The three wire goes on the electrical block on the back of your dryer just like the cord is made. If you look at the cord, it's made flat (Most 3 wire cord are made flat, Some are not) The wire in the middle goes in the middle of the block. The two wires to the outside go to the outside of the block. It makes do difference which wire goes on which side as long as the outside wires go to the outside.

Changing from a 3 prong to a four prong

grasshopper_2.gifWiring in a new power cord for your electric dryer? Upgrading your electric dryer outlet from the old three-prong to the new four-prong outlet? Well, grab hold of those two large lumps at the base of your spinal cord and let's romp through the wild and wacky world of dryer cords and outlets.

tn_3cord_dryer_terminal.jpgtn_4cord_dryer_terminal.jpgThese two pictures illustrate the power wiring on a the terminal of an electric dryer. The one to the left here is the old-style three-wire configuration. Most people have this type in their homes. New code changes, though, require that dryers now have a four-wire cord, shown to the right. These are just just thumbnail pictures that you can click for a larger view. But I'll bet you already figured that out, didn't you?
Besides the number of wires in each cord, there are two important things to notice. First, in the four-wire configuration, notice that the dryer's grounding strap is folded back on itself. The whole point of the four-wire cord is to separate the ground from the neutral. The green wire (the "new" extra wire in the four-wire cord) is attached to the dryer cabinet. In the three-wire configuration, the grounding strap is left intact and the neutral and ground are tied together.
tn_3prong_dryer_outlet.jpgtn_4prong_dryer_outlet.jpgIf you need to re-wire the outlet, these pictures will explain the anatomy of the three-prong (left) and four-prong (right) outlets. Once again, these pictures are just thumbnails--click 'em for a larger view.

Sure hope this helps you find a resolution to your delimma! Best wishes.

New house requires 4 prong plug for dryer...mine has 3...bought new cord...How to wire it?

The old three prong, the vertical prong is neutral (white wire), the two slanted are 220 volts. The new plug, the extra prong is ground (bare wire). Shut off the outlet at the breaker panel, and remove the outlet to examine the wiring to it. It should be as above--the 220 volt wires are red and black or black and black. The ground wire is bare or green insulated. Inside the dryer case, tie the green and white wires to the dryer case, and tie the two outside wires where they went with the old cord. Check with an electrician if you are unsure about this.

Can you tell me how to hookup the three wires of 3 prong cord to the back of dryer that came with 4 wires(4 prong)? Which one goes where? I only have 3 prong plugs at my house. Thank you.

The following link explains how to connect a power cord to your appliance:

Now keep in mind, some newer appliances REQUIRE a 4-prong plug in order to work properly. You may consider having a four-prong outlet installed to accomodate your dryer.

You can try these steps by referring to to section that discusses converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong power cord.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

How do you install a 3 prong power supply cord to a GE Dryer?

you can't change the power supply cord.
the cord came with the dryer is 240v. the three prong is 120v. the dryer will burn up. if you change the power cord without changing the regulator , motor, and the heating element.
you need to get a electrician to run a 240v double breaker from the panel to the dryer.

Change fr 3 prongs to 4

They wire in the same except the green wire will go to a ground screw which should be right in the same area with a green color to it. If no ground screw, hook the green together with the white (center) wire. Hope this helps!

Electric Dryer

If your dryer came with a 4-prong plug, do not change it. For the very reasons you quoted with the article, you may screw up the 110v accessories required of your appliance (like the clock or digital display). It is best to change the household outlet to a 4-prong type. Just make sure your wiring is correct. You will need a neutral on the 4th leg, which means you will probably have to run new wiring from the outlet to the distribution panel.
