What kind of wireless access point or extender should I use to project wifi in far bedrooms of a long, train-car like house?

Our house is designed like three train cars strung together (so we could pour a slab to follow flat ground and avoid pier and beam construction on a hilly lot). I have a new ASUS wifi router wired into the modum, which is located about one third of the way into the house. It projects a wifi signal well to about half the house. Then about two-thirds of the way into the house, I have a new Netgear range extender that takes in the signal from the AUSUS router wirelessly and projects it out to the bedroom wing wirelessly. So it's wirelss in, wireless out. Unfortunately, the wifi signal is weak in the farthest room. I was born in the '50s so I am no genius at this, but it seems logical that if I hardwired the extender to the ASUS router (or to the modem itself?), then the extender would be getting a stronger signal (through a wire) and could project out its wifi signal with greater strength, right? But my Netgear extender does not have a port for accepting a wired signal. It only takes in the signal wirelessly. It has 4 port for sending a signal out -- but not the other way around. There is a wire already run through the walls to a small bedroom near where I have the extender placed now, but I don't have anything plugged into it. Is my theory right and if so, what device should I buy to replace my Netgear extender? Or is there a better solution to the problem of a room with weak or no wifi? Thank you.

Hi James, the wireless extender is the best way but you should go for the plug in type.....this plugs into the mains and gives you wifi and 1 wired connection, so you can plug into the room you want wifi to reach, I have linked a Netgear option but there are others! EX2700

SOURCE: 2 Wire DSL Wireless modem range expander

you might want to try to change the wireless channel 1. open your internet browser 2. type on the address bar 192.168.1.254/management or 172.168.0.1/management and press Enter 3. type your system password (modem password) 4. go to home network -> wireless 5. change your wireless channel to 9 - 10 if after changing the channel it still wont work please check for EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) such as electric appliances, hallucinogen lamps, WIRELESS PHONES, satellite dish and or alarm systems. also make sure that you dont put your router on a carpet. usually a good distance between your router and the computer is around 5 - 20 feet with no walls between them since walls also contribute on the interference. one last note, keep your router away from water i.e. aquariums, water dispenser and the like since water contributes to the interference of the wireless signal

SOURCE: airlink ar430w not giving a network address to netgear wpn111

Try assigning the IP address manually. To do so go to Network Connections, right click on the wireless connection and click on Properties, select Internet Protocol TCP/IP and click on Properties again. Select use the following IP address and type the address of the same range as of your Router's IP. In case you do not know the range try 192.168.1.5 or 172.16.1.5 with the subnet mask as 255.255.255.0 for both, and when you use the IP as 192.168.1.5 use the default gateway as 192.168.1.1 and for 172.16.1.5 use the default gateway as 172.16.1.1 Also select the lower option as "Use following DNS Server address" and for 192.168.1.5 use 192.168.1.1 and for 172.168.1.5 use 172.16.1.1 .Click on Ok. Click on Ok again and now check for the connectivity.

SOURCE: Is the Linksys WRE54G Repeater compatible with the AT&T 2701HG-B

Hi Friend

Its been really unfortunate that the money you have spent is wasted. The main disadvantage of linksys repeater is that these devices are compatible only with linksys routers. There is a seldom chance that these can be compatible with other vendor routers.

Weak wifi signal?

you have 2 possible solutions:
the easiest (but suboptimal) is to put buy a wireless repeater and install it half way between your access point and the point where you experience low coverage.

Amazon com NETGEAR N300 Wi Fi Range Extender Essentials Edition EX2700...

the best solutions is to buy a power line kit like this:
Amazon com NETGEAR PowerLINE 1000 Mbps WiFi 802 11ac 1 Gigabit Port...

you can plug the one without the wifi to a power outlet near your wireless router, and connect the two devices by a network cable. then you can plug the second powerline (the one with the antennas) in a power outlet near the place where you need wifi signal. the second device needs a little configuration (just put same network name and password of your old access point).
this way you will have your a new wifi access point, that will connect to your internet connection by power wires in your house.

What kind of wireless access point or extender should I use to project wifi in far bedrooms of a long, narrow house?

Yes. You are right on track with hard wiring the extender unit. You can also daisy chain another router to that at a distance that is closer to the furthest room. This will give you plenty of signal through out your house.

Why doesn't my netgear extender ask for name and password when I try to use it to connect to internet. It tells me that there is an authentication problem

Hi there! smile.gif Please note that the Tenda 150mbps Wireless Range Extender A3 uses a default IP address of 192.168.0.254 - you must set your IP address to the 192.168.0.* range (* = any number between 2 and 253) to login.

The default access username / password (if required) are admin and admin.

Once you've logged in, you can configure the access point to route through your existing wireless router as the default gateway (eg. if your wifi router is 192.168.1.1, then you would route through that, and set your Repeater (Extender) IP to 192.168.1.2 so that you can connect to it and then "relay" your connection through the repeater. It doesn't mirror the connection details for the existing wifi router, it simply creates an "additional" access point to connect through to your existing wifi router - creating a bridge, essentially.

The extender can be linked to the existing wifi router via LAN cable or WDS. For WDS, you will need to set the IP's 1 digit apart in the last segment (see above IP difference), and switch them both in the Wireless menu to ""Wireless Networking Mode: Network Bridge (WDS), but the SSID must remain the same (eg. "Tenda1") for both of them (it doesn't cause a network loopback), and any wireless security authentication must be identical (password / pass phrase / key + encryption algorithm) on both devices. Again, as with the above point, remember to set the gateway of the extender / repeater to that of the primary WiFi router.

It need to be wire connected to another router, once it has an IP you can access the device with a web browser and configure wireless access pretty much with the same information as your actual wireless access point, same network ID and key.

Hi, I have a 2Wire 270 DSl Modem I had bought through Qwest since they are my ISP. My home is a 1500 Sft Ranch, if the modem is in the bedroom and the Mac Book is in the family room down the hall the...

If the walls in your house are made of lathe and plaster or concrete block, then the performance of WiFi through all the walls in your house will be very bad. The signal that you are receiving from your neighbor's modem is probably only going through two walls (the outside wall of their house and the outside wall of your house), while the signal from your modem is probably going through at least 4 or 5 walls.
I suggest that you do not buy a new modem, but buy a wireless access point, a spool of CAT6 cable and two Leviton RJ45 wall jacks. Run the CAT6 cable from the modem to your bedroom, install the Leviton RJ45 jacks on both ends of the cable, and then connect the wireless access point to the the jack in the bedroom and the modem to the jack near to it.
This will expand the wireless coverage in your house and allow you to buy much better wireless device than QWest would ever sell to you.
Here is a suggestion for Wireless Access Point.
You can buy the CAT6 cable and Leviton RJ45 jacks at Home Depot or Lowes.

Bad WIFI reception

Yes. You can just deploy a Wireless Access Point or a Wireless Range Expander. What they do is they extend your signal from main router thus, if you're having low reception at one part of your house, deploy the Wireless Access Point there and it's gonna give you another excellent signal.

Connecting 2 wireless routers

As a wi-fi technician, it is not recommended to extend the wireless signal using another wireless router. Having 2 wireless routers will just cause conflict to your wireless network. If you still have time, please replace the router with a Wireless Access Point (WAP54G). WAP is easy to setup. Just plug it to one of the ethernet port on the back of your router and run the setup CD that came with it, that's it. It'll extend your signal.

If your main concern is just extending your wireless signal to another far place outside your house, Wireless Range Expander (WRE54G) can also be used. It is a similar device like an Access Point but its signal extending capability is more powerful than Access Point. Its also easy to setup, just the setup CD that came with it.

You can also contact the Linksys toll free tech support # at 1800-3267114 if you wanna resolve the issue over the phone. Hope that helps.
