I took the memory card out and unlocked the card but the main screen still has write protect on the screen

From your description it sounds like you have locked the card! While the card was being used it would be unlocked so when removed you should just read the card! What type of card is it and are you reading it on a PC?

When this problem occur you need to set the memory card unlock or not protected. Remove the memory card from camera and you can see a small button in the memory card, so you need to slide that to set the memory card unlock or not protected.

Memory card locked!??

The card locked usually means 'protected' Check out the manual for image protection - on/off. Or put card back into computer and delete[NOT FORMAT] from there. A more comprehensive manual is usually found the the CD that came with the camera
