My microwave used to continue making sounds even when item was taken out and cooking time completed. I thought this was part of the mictowave cooling down (sim to fan oven). However, this noise has now stopped . The micriwave cooks as normal. Is there a problem

All microwaves do have a "transmitter" tube called a magnetron. It has to put electrical power into microwaves. To do so it gets warm or even hot. As soon as the transmitter is to hot, it must be cooled down. Most of the time it can be cooled without a fan. But as long as the thermostat indicates it is to hot, the system will cool. Even when you switched the system off. Don't unplug the microwave when it is still hot. It could damage the magnetron.

Testimonial: "Am I still ok to use the microwave without the fan or is it dangerous"

  • Harrie Jan 15, 2015

yes of course. When it gets warm again, the fan will start again. And there are more security systems in the microwave. If the fan can't cool enough, the microwave will stop heating.

How do I turn off the cooling option on my Novamatic microwave?

The word COOL is displayed when the microwave goes into a cooling cycle. The cool cycle is a feature that ensures the operating components of the microwave (Inverter and Magnetron) are cooled after operation by running the fan inside the microwave.
The cooling function is activated whenever the microwave runs for over 3 minutes or is operated twice within a 10 minute period. The word COOL is displayed to tell you why the fan is still running. You do not have to wait for the cool cycle to complete before using the microwave again, simply enter the cooking operation you wish to perform and the cool cycle will stop and the microwave will perform the cooking operation you have just entered.

I have a russel hobbs CJ/AL28 microwave, the fan has stopped working .I have removed it from appliance and it works independantely .what can be wrong withit?

With a basic microwave there is a minimum of electronics and the fan starts when the oven is switched on and continues working until cooking has finished. In that case the fan is supplied from the timer and the circuit will be simple to check using a multimeter.

The more upmarket microwaves contain a great deal more electronics and the fan will continue to run after cooking has finished until the circuitry has cooled to a predetermined temperature.
In that case the the checking, fault location and rectification is probably completely beyond even most service engineers - who typically would simply replace circuit boards until the fault is cured...

G E microwave model # JVM1190BY has reading sensor error or error 3 or at times just starts up when we are not even using. tried shutting circut breaker....whats going on

Hello

"ERR 3" means that the magnetron units have failed in the microwave. Food will not cook or heat up when the microwave is in use.

This code is different than "ERR 1" or "ERR 2" because with those the microwave is still operational. "ERR 3" means a complete failure.

The magnetron is the main source of power and heating in a microwave. Magnets work inside a magnetron tube to create the heat and voltage needed to cook items.

Bring the microwave back to the retailer or a repair shop for service. You may also consider purchasing a whole new microwave if the prices are cheap enough.

I have a GE JVM1190 Microwave Oven. It's sounds

It's cooking when it shouldn't, but the internal cooling fan is not running, so the magnetron is overheating, which can kill it.

Then when it gets hot enough, it trips the magnetron's thermostat, interrupting all power to the microwave. When it cools, it comes back on.

If and when an oven is coming on or doing anything by itself, this is very dangerous and can result in a fire.

So until it is repaired, please leave it unplugged or leave the door open when it's not in use, and of course one should never leave a microwave unattended while cooking.

The problem is almost certainly that the power relay on your control circuit board is shorted.

We regularly repair such control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid with a one-year guarantee.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more free information & help.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Microwave runs without cooking

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

Emerson Model MW9325SL microwave oven looses power

It sounds like either a filter is clogged, an air vent in the back is blocked, or the internal cooling fan is not running.

We have a sound clip here of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are working.

This overheating can happen if you put it in a cabinet or push it against a wall.

Many Emerson microwave owner's manuals are available for free download here.

Even though yours may not be there, there might be one close enough to help you.

Microwave turns on but it makes strange noises and does not cook anything. After a little while I get an error message that says something like cooking sensor has timed out

So we can help you, please post a NEW question, and please include your full model number from the tag in or on the unit, as well as the answers to these questions:

When you try to microwave are the inside light, internal cooling fan and turntable all working?

Is there any unusual noise or is it louder or quieter than normal?

Microwave still continues after cooking time is ended

It is the fan. Im guessing it only happens on combination cook and not when you are only using the microwave setting. It happens because the oven is hot and it helps to cool it quicker. It is normal. The microwaves are not working and neither is the oven-just the fan.

Timed Power Loss

It sounds like your magnetron is failing, but generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part (such as a shorted diode)

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information, info on door switch diagnosis and replacement, and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

We're happy to help and we appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.
