GE microwaves are notorious for the magnetron failing, this is what generates the microwaves. Usually the unit will make a louder than normal deep hum when running if this is the case, but not always. If you have the schematic, you can measure for 120 volts leaving the control board to the transformer, you can simply measure the line in on the transformer for this. You also want to visually note that all other functions like the countdown timer, inter light, turntable, and fan are all running when you start a cooking cycle. The monitor, and interlock switches mounted on the latch assy need to be checked for continuity too. If replacing the magnetron we always recommend replacing the high volt diode connected to the capacitor and chassis ground. Pleazer Appliance...

SOURCE: microwave runs but does not heat

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

The diode is a fairly cheap fix, and the mag will cost more.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html (if it's not shorted, it's probably okay)
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/xformer.html

You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Remove 2 screws from front vent cover and removed vent cover
Remove one screw from top of display
Gentley push display panel up about 1/4 inch and tilt the top toward the front.
Disconnect 3 thin gauge molex connectors
Disconnect 1 heavey gauge connector
Remove screw from grounding wire at botton of display curcuit board
Remove display panel completely

Remove grill from above display area
To the left is a 2 x2 inch square board
Coil, capacitor and fuse block
Remove fuse
Check fuse rating
Match fuse rating and replace

SOURCE: GE Spacemaker microwave XL1400

If everything else is running but the food is not heating, the microwave generator is shot and needs to be replaced... Unfortunately, you need to be certified in handling the units so the average consumer cannot buy one (at least not as far as I could find when I had to replace mine) .

Will cost $150 to $200 so unless you have a pretty fancy microwave it will probably cost less to just replace the whole darn thing - So much for going green!

SOURCE: microwave blows fuse in microwave mode grill function ok

It is most likely the capacitor has shorted or the rectifier has shorted. Check with ohmeter, but make sure it is discharged first by shorting the capacitor with a wire.

It does everything except heatinig up food. Model # JVM 3660 SD 001

The magnetron is not working. This open it and check to see if it has a blown fuse. Some microwave would have seperate fuse for the heating power. If fuse is good. You may be able to get a used magnetron from another microwave. Somtimes pawn shops would sell microwave for 5 or ten dollars just because it doesnt have a turnplate inside.

Works but no heat

Possibly a blown fuse inside, or a defective magnatron. If you decide to open the unit, please unplug it first!
