Aligning NorthStar For The First Time

I have successfully comleted the proccess all the way up until step 4 where it told me to choose a country and press enter, then choose the city that I am closest to and press enter, up until then everything was fine, but then instead of the message saying "Center Star 1", it says "Center Star 2", and if I attempt to continue the setup proccess, the message will next say "Center Star 3", I cannot get it to start with Center Star 1, I have tried removing the 9v battery from the NorthStar computerized base for several hours to allow it to reset itself, but it always starts out with Center Star 2 when I reach that portion of step 4: Set The Location.
Please Help,
George Hudson

I have a celestron Cosmos 90 GT Wifi telescope and so far haven't been able to use it. I struggle with aligning the telescope to 3 bright stars... if by chance it says its aligned when I choose a star

Aligning a scope requires several things to be correct.
1. You must follow the setup in manual 100%
2. You must pick the correct alignment stars. Most failed alignments are because you aligned on the wrong star. So alignment requires you to learn the names of a few bright stars and be able to spot them in the sky.
3. With many goto scopes there might be a "home position" to start the alignment. For example, tube pointed roughly North, and level. Check your manual for a "home position. Also time, date, and site must be correct.

What am I doing wrong with my star alignment process? Please help.

I don't know your scope in detail, but if you can read this you should be able to go to the user manual here

There are a few things common to these goto hand controls.
- you must enter the time and date accurately, and be correct about daylight saving settings, and observe the date format
- you most likely will have to go through time and date setting steps each time, but the control will probably remember one of these at least. You will see what it has already set when you come to that step next time around.
- the mount should be leveled as far as possible, or pointing errors will appear when the scope slews around.
It could be that the scope has no idea at all where the align star is, when using Earth Align. You are teaching it that, but if the rough location it tries to reach is way way off, it seems you need a second star and Align Star mode. Often with these devices you need one star from either side of the meridian.
You could also start again with a different city, but one in the opposite direction to the first. I would try cities all around the compass to see if one gives a better result.

I cant get an image or focus

Put the eyepiece with the largest number written on it into the focuser. DO NOT USE the 2 x barlow if you have one. Go outside during the day time and practice focusing on a distant object, by turning the knob on the focuser in both directions until you see a sharp image.

The hand held unit lights up when turned on, and the telescope "homes" but the LED does not show anything. The voice speaks "Bushnell Northstar" but very quietly. The telescope can be moved by the bottom 4...

Can you reverse the cable end to the hand controller-- a bad cable can cause this. Also low power supply, depleted batteries can also cause this.

Return the hand controller for replacement if batteries and or a new cable do not fix this.

Someone told me that the Meade Lightbridge could be equipped with Go-To Tecnology.T/F?

PUSH TO -- encoders can be mounted on to the base RA and DEC. After aligning on two known stars the hand controller will "point" to objects in the sky.

How do you align the 78-7860

Align the small finder scope with the main tube. During the day time point the scope at at the top of a telephone pole and get the top centered in the eyepiece on the main tube. Then without moving the tube adjust the crosshairs or the red dot to point at the exact same spot.

Computer not accurate

Looking through the manual (link follows) please check that you set the time in 24 hour clock with timezone correctly. Also the date & of course location. I see no reset function in the manual but I guess leaving the batteries out for a while will reset it. Manual link: Also although it says you do not need to know where the stars are you're aligning to it's good to have some idea that you're actually aligning with "Mizar" or whatever. You can find maps of the night sky where you are on this link: Finally check if there is a local astronomy group that you can join, they are always ready to encourage & help people.
