Blank Screen - Sony Ericsson Z525a

I have a Sony Ericsson Z525a. I was going through my contacts list and then all of the sudden my screen went white. I didn't even drop it.
I can still make calls and recieve calls, but I can't see anything.
The internal screen is just white, and the external is just blue.
Help!

had the same thing happen to me...and in another country...anyone know of any codes that can be used to check the screen..I found such a code once but...it's on a piece of paper 10,000 miles away and I can't find the information on the web....

  • Eric Sonyson Nov 16, 2007

Identical problem on my wife's Z525a. Screen went blank while she was using it last night, now it shows only white background. I have powered it off & on several times but can't see anything, even though it can receive calls fine. Only possible clue to problem is the battery was very low before display went out, but phone has since been allowed to recharge overnite. As a test, this morning I switched battery & SIM chip with my phone (also a Z525a)...no change whatsoever. Any ideas? Is there a reset button or key sequence anywhere? Thanks. Steve

One day my screen just went blank, just after my warranty period ended. Grrr.

  • heyblue526 Dec 29, 2007

Ok, I am in the same crowd. My Z525A screen went white also for no apparent reason. I have tried everything but nothing seems to work. I can call out and receive phone calls but have no way of accessing any of the other features. Any one have a repair answer?

  • Anonymous Jan 01, 2008

My daughter's went white, and two of our friends. Do you think there is something more to this than just a single phone problem. The three that I know of went white on the same day......

  • Tippy1017 Jan 08, 2008

The same exact thing happened to my z525a today... I was checking a text message and the screen just went white, and the external screen is blue... My battery was low (if that's any clue)... But I hadn't dropped it or anything.. It just went blank... I haven't found or heard of any way to fix it though =(

  • mockmakk Jan 29, 2008

yep ... white screen ... the att&t store rep said it's a glitch ... out of warranty would have to purchase a new phone and reminded me I have 7 months left on my contract for service that totally sucks (no coverage around my neighborhood and beyond but once did) ... also my z525a battery melted while charging just a week after purchase ... no more at&t no more sony phones ... sad situation

  • Twik Feb 02, 2008

BSOD today at 7pm. Took the same steps everyone else did. Same results, can receive calls, just can't see screen. Of course, out of warrenty on Dec. 12th. Very nice. Have emailed SE about their take on the situation and possible solution. If they have nothing to say, I will be forced to admit my single foray into the SE world was a dismal failure and I of course will share my experience. Lets hope they have a solution, it was a great phone for the 13 months (of a 24 month contract) that the phone worked.

  • Twik Feb 02, 2008

I called the Sony Ericsson line today (they are open 9-11 est, 7 days/wk). My phone apparently had an extended warrenty period on it. I am sending it back for free repair. They gave me an RMA (return authorization number) and said I'd have it back in 7-10 business days. That may seem like a long time, but that's standard for phone repair. If they follow normal protocol, they'll either send a new phone or repair this one. Either way, it's a satisfactory resolution. Please try calling SE and giving them a chance to fix the problem. If you have another phone (maybe an old one you upgraded from), it won't be much more than a hassle.

They also gave directions on how to retrieve all the numbers, which I think agrees with the other post.

    1. Center Button

    2. Down 1 time

    3. Center Button

    4. Up 2 times

    5. Center Button

    6. Down 5 times

    7. Center Button

    8. Down 5 times

    9. Center Button

    10. Center Button

    11. Top Left

    12. (WAIT for Numbers to load)

    It worked!

  • ashleyohus Feb 07, 2008

I'm in the same boat... mine stopped working 2 days ago. It wasn't dropped or anything. Called Sony and they suggested buying the DCU60 USB cable. The website sonyericsson.warrantyprograms.net has an offer code for 20% OFF accessories: 20XO86.

We'll see... I can't believe so many are having the same issue and they really don't seem to care.

my phone just went blank and now it wont turn on at all do you think i should but another battery

  • typical08 Mar 07, 2008

Hi everyone.  I have this same phone and have the same problem.  When it first happened a few months ago all I had to do was turn it off and back on.  But now it is permanent.  I went to my carrier and they said I had to contact Sony Ericsson ( I had said I didn't think I deserved to pay for a new phone when it wasn't my error but it was a hardware issue on the phone and poorly made).  I called SE and they mailed out the 'cable' that connects to your computer and you download an update service for your phone.  When I get it connected it tells me my phone has all the updates, but would I like to continue anyway.  I continue anyway, and of course it does nothing to help.  I call SE annoyed and tell them I want a replacement, it has happened to others and that their cord didn't work.  They tell me to contact my carrier... I contact my carrier, I plead my case for about 40minutes, but nothing.

I think everyone should all write to Sony Ericsson complaining about this phone, then maybe they will do a recall. I know I will be writing, and sending along the bill for my new phone I had to buy.

  • DFW_MrH23 Apr 12, 2008

April-2008, I have two Z525a cell phone. Both went White Screen of Death in the past week. Both are beyond ATT and SE warranties by 2 months. Both companies don't seem to want to help. I have tried the software update via the USB cable, that didn't work.

Will likely switch to new phones or drop ATT and SE and never use them again.

  • Anonymous Aug 22, 2008

SE sent me the USB cable so I could update the software, but this did not fix the blank screen. Now they say I can send it in and they will fix it. This will take 3 weeks. Since this is the only phone I own, this is not an option. They will not provide a loaner phone. I will not be buying SE ever again.

I have the same problem it was fine but the battery was low so I plugged it in in the car and it looked fine when i plugged it in but when i got home i noticed that the screen what blank so i turned it off then turned it back on didn't help so i took out the battery and sim card and that didn't help i dont know what else to do, I havent even had the phone for a year.

  • Exscab Sep 08, 2008

I've had the same problem - twice now. Neither time have I done anything odd. The phone still works - I can send and recieve calls, and if I had the entire phone memorized I bet I could send a text or call my contacts - but I don't have them memorized. I tried everything I could the first time, and eventually they replaced it but I had to pay for it and lost all of my memory. This time I've tried to update it myself, but nothing works. I had the first phone for under a year and this one about six months. NEVER buing SE again. EVER.

  • mccgpedcr Sep 08, 2008

Last Thursday mine got the WSOD also. I bought a replacement Z525 off E-Bay (wish I hadn't now after reading all these pages). My only real annoyance is resetting all my contacts ( I messed up the process and copied the default contacts from the new phone onto MY sim card) so that killed the chance of transfering my 100+ contacts to my phone. I have also lost 2 years of pictures. That is killing me. I will try the DL cable so we'll see if that works.

Sony needs to recall these POS phones if this many people are having issues from a "glitch".

We all need to be "squeeky wheels" !!!

  • studentKris Oct 21, 2008

I just got the white screen of death and want to replace my "flex cable" or whatever. I'm just confused, cause when I looked up the cable on ebay, it looked different than the pictures offered on the website:

    http://www.2valor.com/Service/dface/ERIZ...

Will it make more sense when I take the phone apart? Is there something I'm not getting? Does anyone have more info (and maybe words) about replacing the flex cable?

Thanks for any and all assistance!

  • stunt101baby Feb 10, 2009

Same here. Today I've gotten like 10 texts and I have no idea what they are & who they are from because my most important contacts know my phone's screen is blank. I remember how to read and reply to another number but that isn't possible at the moment. What are the step by step instructions on how to forward them to my email address? Ahh just got another text.

I have a Sony Erricsson Z525a with same problem as others screen is blank and the rest seems to work

  • Anonymous Feb 16, 2009

same as previous; the solution is to replace the flexi cable; however it is not clear if the flex cable z520i is the same as the z525 flex cable.

  • andme Feb 28, 2009

My husband and I each bought one of these phones. Twelve months later both phones got permanent WSOD within one week of each other. This made me quite suspicious. I'm even more suspicious after reading the comments here.

  • spitts48 Apr 26, 2009

The internal and external screens on my Z525a are white and blank . The external screen was ok for a few minutes, then went white, also. this really makes me angry! Obviously, Sony doesn't care! There are no positive comments on the web about this situation and what Sony is willing to do!

  • Anonymous May 05, 2009

Yeah, I had the same problem but with the Sony Ericsson w380a, my screen went totally black and the external screen worked randomly.

  • chubby2 May 11, 2010

asimovK, can you post those additional pics? I have the phone apart, but would like to know i can get the cable out and back in before buying a replacement. Also, do you know the failure mode? Broken wire, bad connector, etc? Can you get schematics?

The fix for the Ericsson z520/z525 White Screen of Death (WSOD) is to buy a new flex cable and replace it. You can get one off eBay for like $10 after shipping.

Taking apart your phone can be a little tricky. You'll need a T6 Torx bit and a little courage. You can use this site as a start. After that, a pair of tweezers and a few photographs to get you back where you started is all you need. I can post a couple pics I took, if there's interest.

Note this only fixes the WSOD case where the phone still can make and receive calls, you just can't see anything on either screen.

Unfortunately this seems to be a problem that happens to all sony ericsson z525a phones before too long. (And it seems sometimes it happens on the anniversary of the expiration of any and all warranties)

I did finally arrive home and actually located the piece of paper with all the codes I could find at the time for a z525a...

I'll post them here and let you know that when I tried them on my phone (when the screen worked) they did exactly what they were supposed to. You can test the screen...but only if the screen is working.

Unfortunately none of these codes will work if you have a phone with a blank screen...

THANKS SONY

again...none of these seemed to fix the problem of the blank screen...but if you should get another z525a you can use these commands to do what they're listed to do....until the screen goes blank....

thought this might be useful to someone with a blank screen:

to retrieve your numbers you would need to follow these key strokes...

center, toggle down (1 time), center, toggle up (2 times), center, toggle down (5 times), center, toggle down (5 times), center (3 times)

then wait for quite some time...it takes a while to copy all of the contacts...I would say anywhere from 5 to 10 mins...

this should work to save your contacts.

To save your pictures (and any other data you might want to retrieve) you could buy Sony's data cable for the z525a. I haven't tried this but it should work since that is what the cable is for.

Its called a DCU-60 USB data cable, and is listed as being compatible with the z525a.

My wife and I may have the LAST to working Z525A phones on the planet. Or make that 1.5 phones - Mine got the WSOD today! Pretty good run for two 2G phones which ATT will soon stop supporting.

But I needed to get my contacts off the phone and had not backed them up to the SIM (SmartCard) in who knows how long, So using my wife's phone as the secret decode ring, I figured out the key strokes to copy ALL CONTACTS to the SmartCard. It worked like a charm (slipped my SIM into her phone and there were my SIM contacts - her phone contacts were undistrubed). BTW I tested this by first coping All of her contacts to her sim card.

So here are the magic keyStrokes:

Z525A: Copy contacts to SmartChip:

  • Open Phone (turn On and wait for it to initialize)
  • TopRight (Menu),
  • Down (AddressBook), select,
  • Up, Up (Options), select,
  • Down, down, down, down, down (Advanced), select,
  • down, down, down, down, down (copy to SmartChip), select,
  • select (copy All),
  • TopLeft (Yes),
  • WAIT A LONG TIME (1+ minutes for copy to complete)!,
  • Close Phone (End)
  • Take out your SmartCard (SIM) and put it in you new phone
NOTE: (ITEMS) in parenthesis are the labels of the major steps

GOOD LUCK!

I tried taking apart my phone to replace the flex cable. DON'T DO IT! It's not worth the hassle. It's very difficult and doesn't work because you need some way to glue and twist the cable. The flex cable is very fragile and you risk snapping it. It took me 3 long hours trying to put my phone back together with no instruction. I had to figure it out all by myself. The flex cable replacement don't work.

Also, 525a had screen start rolling while looking at contact list and then when phone turned off and on to see if it fixed problem. It went to White Screen of Death WSOD. Yes can also send and recieve calls so no problem there. The phone has not been dropped nor has the screen been damaged, but 8 months ago it was exposed to moisture so my "tags" are somewhat pink so it probably won't be covered by my carriers warranty plan, but I will be calling sony se to see what they are doing for support.

Posted on Feb 14, 2008

I have just called Sony Ericsson and they have said that 90% of all cases can be fixed by getting their USB cable (which they will ship for free) and using their update software (which you can download for free). The software steps you through the update.

They said it will take 2-3 days for the cable to arrive. I have two phones that have just died so I will see if this fixes them both.

This has happened with my z520a also - the only thing that has fixed it is holding down the power button until the phone shuts off - wait 1-2 minutes and then turn it on again... the screen comes up fine (until it happens again!)... Good luck

then wait for quite some time...it takes a while to copy all of the contacts...I would say anywhere from 5 to 10 mins...

this should work to save your contacts.

To save your pictures (and any other data you might want to retrieve) you could buy Sony's data cable2.gif for the z525a. I haven't tried this but it should work since that is what the cable is for.

Its called a DCU-60 USB data cable, and is listed as being compatible with the z525a.

to turn on the bluetooth: center, toggle down (2 times), toggle left (1 time), center, toggle left (4 times), center (2 times). then the return button 3 times to go back to the "main screen". hope this helps
