hi Sue. Why does my bobbin thread keep bunching up?
Check Your Tension Settings. Looping underneath the fabric usually occurs when there is not enough tension in the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. Sometimes thread bunching can be caused by something as simple as the tension dial being inadvertently turned. Sewing Machine Thread Bunching Up Here Why .
if you go to this link a little pop up will come up just close this down.
or try this one.
It sounds like you either have a thread stuck somewhere, probably in the bobbin area, OR your needle is not right. It could be loose and hanging too low or it could be bent. Clean your machine. It that doesn't fix it, change the needle.
is the needle the right one for the machine? is the needle & thread correct for the fabric? it's possible that the machine is out of time & would have to be retimed by a sewing machine shop
You can download a manual for $10 at www.sewingmanuals.com and it should help you. A couple of suggestions though, is your needle inserted correctly? Flat side facing the rear of the machine, fresh needle? Threaded correctly on top and bobbin area? Is your thread good not too old and the same type in bobbin and top? Did you leave a long enough tail in the bobbin thread? 3-4 inches which you hold with your left hand. Is the thread in the bobbin unwinding the right way? Are you turning the handwheel towards you, not away from you at least two revolutions or until you see the thread loop? Try these suggestions, and I am sure one will work unless your timing is off and it needs professional service.
Deep breath and start at the beginning, make sure the presser foot is up before you thread the machine, top tension should be about 4 or 5, make sure the thread has gone between the discs, make sure the bobbin is turning anti clockwise in the bobbin case, you should only just be able to pull the thread through with slight resistence, if it is too tight loosen the scew on the bobbin case about a quarter of a turn and test, repeat if you have to, remember that Singer machines do not work well with thread that is not mercerised, if the thread is not being pulled through at all then the chances are the machine will need retiming.
that the machine is threaded correctly, that the needle is in
properly, that the bobbin case and bobbin are both inserted correctly
and that you are not using old thread.
Make sure that there is a new needle in the machine and loosen the top
tension about a number
"Birdnesting" occurs when there is no tension on the needle thread to pull the bobbin thread. This is easily corrected by rethreading the machine, following the threading path carefully and making sure the thread is fully engaged in the tension mechanism.
