What do I need to fix a cycling compressor fan?

Kenmore Coldspot # 106.44433601 (3/2007). Fridge temp 38F, Freezer 0F. Compressor runs 96 to 109F. Everything works fine, except the compressor fan cycles on and off every few seconds. The coils are a little dusty, but they are inaccessible, under the body of the fridge- I tried blowing them clean with compressed air, but not very successfully. Thanks for any enlightenment you can provide!!

Multiple cycling usually means it\'s having a hard time maintaining temp. This could be a couple reasons but almost every answer begins with "call your local service tech. It could be a simple cleaning of the coils, or a bad thermo expansion value (TXV) which is effectively the thermo-stat or the system needs a new refrigerant charge or the compressor is failing. All of these are best handled by a qualified service tech...it may just be the door is not fully closing.

Testimonial: "Thanks for your help- I noticed now that the fan inside the freezer cycles at the same time as the compressor fan, indicating controller problem, correct?"

I'd check with 2 different lists. The Better Business Bureau can help you find a company that no one has complained about and you may try with a listing service list like AngiesList. They have lists of services with comments and grades for each one.

So it's trying to cool but something preventing the cooling. I'd hate to guess long distance but this sounds like it needs refrigerant. When the service tech comes to charge it up, ask if he can use a colored refrigerant so you can check for leaks. The reason everyone is so cautious about giving advice is the multiple types of rtefrigerant used. A qualified service tech can tell you the difference between them all. Primarily they are all trying not to use R-12 which is freon which is dangerous to the environment and people. Especially near a stove. Modern refrigerators usually use something like HFC-134a, also called tetrafluoroethane.

What do I need to fix a cycling compressor fan in my Kenmore refrigerator?

The compressor fan is powered by the same contractor/relay as the compressor. It should run the same time. If it is stopping, then either an electrical problem exists or the bearings are dried up and it overheats and the internal thermal safety is kicking it out.. You could try lubricating the shaft of the motor but I suggest replacing it.

I own a Kenmore Coldspot 106.71182101 and the refrigerator is now warm while the freezer is perfectly cold and holding it's temp. What can I do about the refrigeratornot being cold?

A common problem; the fan which should circulate some of the cooled air into the fridge is not running. You can verify this while the compressor is running by wetting your fingers and holding them near the vents in the back of the refrigerator. If you cannot detect any air flow, the fan is dead.

Go to Sears parts website and enter your model number. Especially since it is Kenmore, it should bring up a line-drawing and parts list for your model.
Sears Parts Direct
You can then decide whether it is accessible enough for a DIY replacement or if you would rather call a service company to replace it for you. Check with your local BBB to pick a reliable service company.

Kenmore Coldspot not keeping cold. Ice in freezer

What are your temp controls set to? If the controls are set to the max setting and it won't reach temp, you could have a broad range of problems ranging from bad door gaskets, to bad temp controls, to a low refrigerant charge, to possible a failing mechanical part such as a fan motor or compressor.

Kenmore refridge/freezer just stops working. I

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running. If no check starter/overload relay.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Warm refrig and freezer

You probably need some refrigerant added. There probably is a leak in the system that caused the lack of refrigerant. Get the leak fixed and add refrigerant before you blow your compressor too. Or get a new fridge.

I would look to the condenser where the heat is removed from the refrigeration system for your problem. Check and make sure the condenser fan operates, check the compressor for operation. If the condenser is plugged with dust it will cause the compressor to cycle on its thermal overload protector. Normally in back there is a removable panel to access the condenser and compressor area. make sure you reinstall the cover after you are done. It is critical to proper operation and cooling of the system.

Side by side kenmore

Have same problem on a 2 month old Kenmore 106.5794*700. side by side.
I can see ice / frost build up behind the lower baffle on fridge side. Does not seem to be any airflow from freezer side to fridge side. Freezer is extremely cold, it is about -23F. I read that 0F would be normal. Fridge side is warmish, running at about about +50F when it should be about +32 to +38F.

BTW: Ice pops started sticking to my tongue, thats why I noticed the unit wasn't working correctly.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the compressor is also running all the time as well. Either that or a Fan or something running. That kinda points to a stuck thermostat or some thing causing it to stick. I suspect that if the Freezer thermostat which is located in the Fridge compartment just may to rely on air flow from the freezer side via a duct, if this duct is blocked, the Freezer Thermostat misread the freezer compartment temperature and will always activate the compressor. Wish I had more details on exactly how the freezer thermostat works.

So after reading various forums on this it looks like a defrost issue causing the ice or frost build up or maybe just a faulty thermostat. Maybe there is a common circuit control board for these two functions?

As this is still in Warrranty I have a Sears Tech coming on Monday 14th Jan 08. I'll be interested to see what he does.
