Strong ozone-like burning smell

A couple of weeks ago, the dryer stopped and the knob clicked endlessly around the dial. I thought it was the pump, cleared out the hole where things collect, etc. Ran a partial empty wash, then it worked fine again for a few weeks.

Yesterday, during the dry cycle (small load), it started clicking round the dial again, but this time with a strong burning smell almost like ozone, but different. It seems to emanate from the area of the machine with the black plastic part that whirrs around during the dry cycle. I ran an empty partial wash cycle again, then let it sit for a while, and the dryer worked again. There was still a smell, but I couldn't tell if it was new or not.

Today I ran another wash with the top open, and the smell started again, though it seemed to either stay the same or lighten up as it went along. I can't tell if it's residual or not. Any suggestions?

That's a good suggestion. However, the smell was not emanating from the motherboard (I checked), but from a unit with a spinning black part at the top of the machine. It has a copper coil too. I don't know what this part is called. It's also not an electronics burning smell - more like ozone.

I still have this problem... any other suggestions? Anyone even know what that part is called? I tried talking to appliancedesk.com. The agent said he'd troubleshoot with me over the phone, then never called me. I give up on them except to order parts.

Thanks for the idea about the fan motor. I think that is probably it. However, using smaller loads, the machine has been performing well over the last month. Here's hoping it continues for a long time - but if it doesn't, I'll start with that motor. :-)

Sounds to me like the motherboard inside the unit is on it's way to thermal overload. This is a common problem with this particular model. You'll smell electronics burning and one day it'll quit altogether with a burst of smoke. I had this happen to me and I traced the problem back to a faulty triac (transistor-like device) that overheated and caused the circuit board and wiring harness to burn up from excessive current draw. I repaired my motherboard with a new triac ($6) and rewired the harnesses. A cooling fan on the heatsink of the board would solve this problem.

Please stop using this thing. You are working with deadly voltages and a very high risk setting your house on fire.
Keep in mind, if the thing starts to burn you can't use water to put the fire out.
The heating element must be broke lose of its settings, or someone dropped his or her toothbrush in the apparatus. Never try to repair kitchen equipment when it is connected. Not even when you think it is switched off.

Just stopped working. No burning smell. When start button pushed, some kind of tiny "click" sound heard around the timer.

The click is most likely the timer motor moving the dial on the timer. The motor circuit on American dryers is 120 volts whilst the heater requires 240 volts to operate its 5k element. The motor circuit always has the fuse in it. The heating element has limits mounted on it but they only kill power to the element and not the motor. Fuses are usually located on the blower housing next to the control thermostat. MORE HERE

Maytag Neptune Dryer with strong "burned electrical wiring" smell

Sounds like the motor went out. Before trying to start it it needs to be inspected. If you are not comfortable opening up the cabinet then I would would recommend calling a service tech. If you need further assistance please let me know.

EZ3612 - spins for couple of times then stops with burning smell and mode light blinking 13 times

Per the service manual, if the mode light blinks 13 times, there's a bad dryer sensor or thermostat. I'm not sure if that related to your problem but it's a start.

Plasma TV smell?

i had the same prob and thought it would burn off. It didn't after a month. Read the comments and tried the plug direct into wall socket plus i washed off the tv surface several times. Now no smell. Not sure which action cured the problem but i'm now happy. It was so bad i had to leave a window open and at times i would gag from the smell.
