A pet bird is a lot of commitment. Just because it's smaller than traditional pets like dogs and cat doesn't mean it's any easier to take care of. Before you get your heart set on buying a budgie, I'd recommend learning more about them on
https://www.birdcagesnow.com/blogs/bird-blog/pros-and-cons-of-owning-a-parakeet. That's what I did when I was looking into parakeets as pets. Here's what I learned.
Firstly, budgies don't talk like larger species of parrots do, so if you're thinking about getting a bird in the hope that it will mimic your words, it's best to go with a big species like the African Grey.
Secondly, they need to be exercised regularly to keep them healthy (and sane); you can't just leave them in a cage out of sight and out of mind. You need to let them out as often as possible.
Finally, they only live around 8-12 years. Some species of parrots can live up to 50 years and even more, so they have comparatively much shorter lifespans.
I hope this helps!
