Question about Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D / Dynax 7D Digital Camera

1 Answer

Shoots blank (dark) pictures after switching on.

When I don't use my Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D for a few days and try to use it again, I face this weird problem. The camera start normally, but when I press the shutter button, the shutter closes but never fully opens and it seems the shutter only opens to the aperture that was set before shooting the picture. I say, it seems because, if I press the DOF button, I see similar darkness on the shutter, and this is clearly perceptible with a large f-number.

Also, the picture does get recorded but it is completely dark. The camera looses power and I cannot shoot any more. I have to switch the camera off and on and then the entire process repeats itself. I have to try several times (tens of times) and if I am lucky, the camera starts shooting normally. Once the camera starts shooting normally, I seldom see this problem again; with the exception of one occurrence, this problem appears, very consistently, when the camera has gone through several days of inactivity. I have tried several combinations of shocking the camera (by keeping the shutter pressed while switching the camera on/off, pulling out and putting in the battery, etc. but nothing seems to help with any certainty.

Could not find anything on this and the camera does have the latest driver (1.10u). I don't have any certified camera repair shops as well. Any suggestion of repair shops would also be helpful.

This is a known design defect in the cameras and Sony is repairing them, even if your warranty is expired.

This is a common problem with the 7D. The shutter curtain will stick after several years of service. Put the camera in clean mode to get the curtain to lift, or send it to Sony to replace it. It was a design flaw by Minolta.

Mainly with Sky back gounds of blue there are dark spots appearing on the picture which are not due to marks on the lens. On Lighter sky photographs they are not as noticable or disappear. Change the lens...

The spots are dust on your sensor. You can clean these yourself but you must learn the techniques first. Google the a DSLR sensor. You will be taken to sites which will explain in detail how to do it and what supplies you will need. It may seem daunting at first, but it is really easy once you know how.

My minolta maxxum 7d won't take a picture....The shutter will push down but no picture will be taken. I tried it later in the day then it worked. Now today I tried, it worked this morning and then not...

Precision Camera picked up the responsibility for fixing the 7D and 5D Konica-Minolta cameras when Sony bought out K-M. I contacted them when my 7D wasn't functioning, and sent them my camera. Fortunately, on of the problems was "First Frame Black". Precision completely refurbished my camera and returned it to me in better than new condition. Sony picked up the full cost for the total refurbishing; all I paid was the shipping cost to Precision. I might add that my 7D was not in warranty. The URL for Precision Camera is: . Give it a shot.

When powering up the camera, a clicking noise occurs for a few seconds then stops. Lens focus OK but camera will not take picture.

That is the soung of everything, including the lens & mirrors getting locked into place. It's normal. I wore out a Maxxum (after about 9,000 pictures) and bought another.

Yes this is a common problem. Set the camera to take a long exposure shot (5 seconds) and with the lens off take a photo. Can you see the ccd or just the shutter (black)? If its just the shutter the shutter is jammed. It's basically a question of persisting with rebooting the camera and taking shots until the shutter frees itself.

I had the same problem. Took picture; camera turned itself off after one shot; review of picture showed no image (black). Thought it was battery or card but battery fully charged. Took card out; turned camera on; activated shutter; camera turned itself off. Reinserted (same) card; turned camera on; took picture; problem solved. No idea why. Gary
