Re: My dyson animal runs for a few and then shuts off I...
Put the 'carpet, floor' selector switch on 'floor' . With the machine unplugged and turned over on it's face, sense how much pressure there is on the 'brush roller', to turn. Check how much hair there may be in the hinge areas on the ends. That's' my guess.

DC28 has two washable filters engineered to last the lifetime of the machine in normal use. These should be washed at least once every 3-6 months as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for both filters to dry completely before replacing them in the machine.

If your DC28 shut itself off while you were using it, it sounds like it may have overheated. Like most Dyson vacuums, it includes a safety device which shuts the vacuum down for protection if it begins to overheat. This could be due to a blockage, or because the filters are overdue for a wash.

It's normal for your machine to become warm in use - like most Dyson vacuums, DC41 Animal will shut itself down for protection if it starts to overheat.
It's also a good idea to give the filters a wash - in normal use this should be done at least once every three months, as shown in the video below. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filters to dry completely before replacing them.
If you'd like further advice after you've given this a try, please give our experts a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).
Vacuum Cleaners require AIr-Flow. Your machine is not getting any air-flow. The noise you hear is a valve opening up to prevent your machine from overheating and burning out the motor. You probably have an obstruction somewhere in the machine. Dysons are kind of known for that in the vacuum cleaner world. Check all air channels and clean them out. If that fixes the problem you still might have issues that caused it to clog up.
I posted the part second because it takes 24 hours to complete it. Be sure you wash your Washable Pre-filter. It needs to dry for 24 hours. Never put it back in the machine wet.
Once it is completely dry reinstall the pre-filter and your machine should be back to normal operating functions.
I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC17. Your machine is equipped with a safety device which shuts the cleaner down to prevent overheating - this is often due to a blockage, or because the filter needs a wash.
The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online support guide:
In normal use, the filter should be washed at least once every 3-6 months. I note you've already cleaned the filter, but you might want to watch the video below to check you've done so as recommended. Use cold water without detergent, and allow at least 24 hours for the filter to dry completely before replacing it.
This should resolve the issue, but for any further assistance or advice, please call us free on 1-866-693-9766, or email us at [email protected]
Sorry to hear you're having difficulties with your DC25 Animal. Like most Dyson cleaners, your DC25 is equipped with a safety device which shuts off the cleaner if it starts to overheat. This is often due to a blockage, or because the filters needs a wash. The easiest way to check for and remove any blockages is to follow the steps shown in our online guide: http://www.dyson.com/support/help.asp?article=1148&product=DC25-ANIMAL
You might also want to take a look at the video below to confirm you're washing the filters in your cleaner correctly. Under normal use, it's important to wash both filters at least once every 3 months. They should be washed in cold water without any detergent. Always ensure it's totally dry before replacing it - this may take up to 24 hours.
By clearing any obstructions and washing the filters, you should be able to resolve your issue without further assistance. However, if you've followed these steps and are still concerned, it's probably best if you get in touch with us directly. You can call us free on 08002980298 (UK), or 1866MYDYSON (US). One of our experts will be happy to run through some troubleshooting over the phone with you and recommend the best course of action.
I would clean the filter and let it dry completely for 24 hours. if you put the filter in wet and the run the vacuum the moisture well go in to the cyclone and the dirt would attach to it causing a snowball effect if you will, causing the vacuum to build up with debris and to smell. so clean out that filter really well and let it dry really well then try it out. if it still smells then i would replace the cyclone. they run anywhere around $80.
