The only difference that comes to mind is that the motor mount may be broke, when in reverse it rocks one way and keeps running. When in forward it rocks the other way and lets something short out, or messing with some electrical connection and quits.

Could be fuel filter,air filter,tune up,wires,coils.low idle too low.

It could be 101 things! but, try changing fuel filter first, sometimes they are
so clogged only enough fuel gets through to let it idle.

check cat converter (plugged up)
check idle spped control (id gummed up use brake cleaner spray)

That is the way automatic transmissions usually die when they go slowly :( The reverse idler gear lets go, but the rest of the transmission is not very far behind. I've seen them go a while after reverse gave way, but not very long, usually the whole transmission will pile up pretty soon after. I'd look into getting that tranny rebuilt/replaced before it leaves you stranded and the tow call adds to the bill. The one thing i hate about automatics is the fact that, unlike manuals, they work just great one minute, and the next minute, they just quit working all together. Before anything else, just check your transmission fluid level with the motor running, transmission in neutral, parking brake set, but in your case, because it goes forward, the level is probably ok, the tranny probably has internal problems...

Sounds like a problem with the gear selector itself. These can wear and cause the problems you describe. Another possibility is that something underneath the car is interfering with the action of the gear selector. I recently had a car with a broken exhaust mount. As a result he exhaust had dropped into a different position and was preventing the free movement of the gear selector underneath the car. All gears could be engaged apart from reverse - so worth investigating.

Trans is internally worn and only sealing properly when parts are hot. I would change fluid and filter just to be sure pressure loss is not from filter but if it does not improve, start saving up for a rebuild.
