You have a short circuit somewhere and this is likely what drained your battery. Could be a bad alternator, wire rubbed through insulation, or other short. Get someone to look under hood while you try to crank it and see if they can tell where smoke is coming from. As an old professor once told me "All electrical circuits run on smoke. Be careful not to let it get out!" lol.

SOURCE: Car won't start even after new battery purchase

Alternator problem, the alternator charges the battery when car is running, so it has probably died now. Was working at reduced capacity for a while, which is why you were only getting a partial charge for some time. Now you have an open circuit completely as alternator has failed completely, time for a visit to an auto electrician. PS replacing acid in battery with distilled water is not a good idea. It probably was time for a new battery anyway.

SOURCE: 2000 Jetta is Leaking antifreeze and smoking

I think you mean you saw water vapor (some call it steam) not smoke.

You probably have a hose leaking (badly). If it's not a hose, your water pump shaft seal is probably kaput.

SOURCE: 2003 Ford Escape won't keep running

2 solutions: first, ignition control module is getting hot and shutting car down. 2nd; you didn't mention your dash(service soon) lights were on.

You said the fuel filter was pretty clogged up. It's sounds like a bad case of EGS(ethanol gas syndrome). The ethanol;being a corn deritive;acts like corn liquor(which is what is is), and turns the fuel to goop, and adds large amounts of water through out all the systems.

It clogs up the fuel lines, the injectors, and ruins fuel pumps. It also puts heavy carbon on egr valves, int. and exh. valves, and can ruin oxy sensors, and catalytic converters.

Let's try the cheapest way first:Buy a can of SEAFOAM and Berkline 2+2 at your parts store. Take out the oxy sensor(s) and clean the ends using the 2+2 and re-install.
Then change out the fuel filter again. Pour the SF into a tank of PREMIUM(only) gas. Change the pcv valve. Then start vehicle and let idle for 3-5 min(even if you have to rev it up to do it to get the SF flowing through the system), and then drive it 10 hard miles.

Replace that fuel filter, and then let it idle some more. Your car sounds like it is really messed up bad. Unless you take it to a garage that has a fuel system cleaner machine, this is the best way to do it.

After this, add SF every 3-5000 miles to your tank. It will prevent this from happening again. Also; to be on the safe side. Have a PSI check on your fuel pump. This goop could have burnt it up. I hope this helps.

SOURCE: 87 f250 drained brand new battery

I would first have the alternator checked by an auto electrician to ensure it is working correctly and is providing the correct volume of current. It may be faulty and when driving you will be drawing battery power instead of power from the alternator to run the electrics. This will drain the battery.

Alternators do not last forever and if you are still running the original unit it is likely to be on it's last legs and you will need a replacement unit.

How do you perform a parasitic draw test on a 1996 Ford Taurus GL using a digital multimeter that only has the two prongs mine in specific is a Gardner bender GD T - 3 11 model would I be able to use that...

if you are just trying to see if you have loss, your meter just needs to have current reading capability. Disconnect the ground terminal of the battery and use the meter leads to complete the circuit from negative post to negative cable. Do not have the key on or try to start the vehicle with the meter connected like this as most meters will not handle that level of current. The meter should now show you how much current is being drawn when the car is off. You can then remove fuses for suspect devices to see if the current draw drops.

If I have a 1996 ford taurus GL my battery when the car is not started test out putting 12.05 volts which the mechanic at less Schwab said is okay. But when I turn the key the volts drop to 11.55 sometimes...

It's normal to drop when the key is turned because your electronics are running like your fuel pump, radio, etc. When you start the car it should jump between 13 and 14 volts when running.

If you knew why it stopped running in the first place, you may find out why it wont do anything at all now.
When you say it won't turn over, you do mean , when you turn the key, nothing happens, right ? Does the starter engage at all ? Does something click under the hood ? Any noises ? Can you hear the fuel pump whirring ?

I have a 1994 ford taurus station wagon, the battery won't stay charged, the confusing thing is that the inside panel and door light works

you have a faulty alternator by the sounds of it, try this simple test, : test the voltage of the battery with the vehicle off with a simple multimeter, it should read just over 12v then test it with the car running, it should read around 14-14.5 volts if it still only reads 12v then your alternator needs replacing.

Get the battery recharged and have the alternator tested . Voltage at battery with the car running should be 13.5-14 volts. If the battery light came on with engine running that indicates a bad alternator .NEVER remove battery cables with engine running , tests nothing and could cause ecu failure.

96 taurus wagon goes to neutral when vehicle comes to full stop.

That would be your neutral park switch is bad or broken. If the shifter linkage is not aligned with the neutral park switch it will not work properly. Located on drivers side on top of Trans.
