Microwave isn't working. When you open then close the door, the inside light doesn't turn out and the microwave won't start. Unplugging the microwave and plugging it back in of course turns off the light, but even with the light off and door closed, the unit still won't start. Model is Kitchen Aid Over the Range YKHMS1850SS2. Thanks!
It sounds to me that your door switches aren't working.Your oven is protected by a couple of switches that engage when you open or close the door. They control a couple of safety features and also your interior light. One of them seems defective.
Testimonial: "Thanks Darrell - should I be able to test them using an ohm meter to confirm if one is faulty or do I have to buy the parts and replace them to know if that's the issue?"
Yes you should be able to test them. You'll have to remove the wires to check each switch. Some are n/o and n/c.If they prove alright,it may be the mechanical side of the door not moving the switch.Your light was giving you trouble,so trace the wire to that particular switch.
Thanks Darrell - this is really helpful. I'll check the switch that is wired to the light - much appreciated.
Quick follow-up - if the switch connected to light is defective, would that keep the oven from turning on even if light is off (i.e. plug microwave in, try to start cooking, won't turn on - could faulty switch connected to light do this?)
