I would check your rear end differential or gearbox if 4x4. In my case it was a pin that was loosened from too many burnouts. But I was peg legging( which means I do not have possitraction and only one wheel burns out but the other does nothing.) So the pin worked its way out and ran into the gears. I believe it happens as soon as the pin is loose the pin fly's out with the centrifugal or centripetal force I can't remember which, as the speed changes. Once the pins hit the teeth get ground up. Quick way to check is open differential and drain some oil look for metal. See metal bad sign. At that point you can guess what's next. Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

Sounds like your transmission could be going out, have you checked the transmission fluid? Sometimes the fluid being low will cause gear slippage. other than that it could have a bad linkage.

if the shifter is still firm in its location, the neutral safety switch is located on the left side of the transmission. you can loosen it and relalign it to read the correct gear.

HOPE IT'S NOT PISTON SLAP, IF LACK OF MAINTANENCE WAS THE CASE MAY BE INTERNAL DAMAGE OR VALVETRAIN DAMAGE. IF IT RUNS ROUGH MAYBE SOMETHING ON ROTATING ASSY DAMAGED.

In my 2004 ford explorer - when I let off the gas pedal I have a thumping sound. As soon as I hit the gas pedal again it quits. When it is coasting it is thumping.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Thumping". Please explain if this thumping is engine or body related. Try to describe the symptoms with more detail. Thumping to me, could refer to a Random Misfire, Internal transmission failure, Using the 4WD while on the wrong road surface or the tires are not all the same size, a defective U-joint (in the drive-shaft), a defect inside the rear drive-axle (ring&pinion), maybe a defect in a tire (not balanced or a bubble in the side-wall or tread), wheel bearing, ball-joint, tie-rod, or a needed alignment (observe if the vehicle pulls to one side and look for irregular tire wear). Let me know, good luck.

Thumping sound when coasting in ford escape awd

I suspect there will be something loose in a CV joint, under load it will be held in place but when it is not under load it flaps around causing the thumping. You should be able to identify which side of the vehicle it is coming from then a mechanic should see it ASAP because if it lets go completely it will not only be dangerous and stop the vehicle from going anywhere it will be very expensive to fix the colateral damage.

I have 2004 Ford Explorer with a thumping feel and sound. When I drive over 50 mph and let it coast, the thumping starts. I feels as if it's coming from the back but not sure. The check engine light is...

if your lucky, its just a u-joint going out.

try replacing the u-joint which connects the driveshaft to the rear end(differrential), and if that does not solve it, then have your differrential checked out (a bad differential usually wont get all the power to the wheels that its supposed to) or just have it replaced, possibly with a junked differrential form a wrecked vehicle with low miles.

I have a 98 Ford Explorer. When I put it in 4 wheel drive sometimes I hear a thump under it shortly after. It does not do it all the time. Just every once in a while when I put it in 4wd.

If it is "right after you select 4x4" then it sound normal if you have miles on it. If the thump is on one side or the other and when braking then a strut bushing

Severe vibration and knocking sound!

sounds more like a ujoint or a center support for the drive shaft. also check and make sure that the flywheel bolts have not come loose. also check the harmonic balancer and make sure it is not seperating
