This is normal behaviour when running the display "clone" mode, where the projector displays the same view as your laptop
To avoid the resolution change, go to display settings, and select "extend desktop" mode. This will allow different resolutions, and will run powerpoint presentations on the second screen
Try changing the laptops resolution in the Control Panel. Click Start/Control Panel and look for Display or Appearance and Personalization. Click the Settings tab and increase the screen resolution and see if that helps.
The easiest thing to try is change the screen resolution before connecting via HDMI. The process is a little different depending on what operating system you're using.
For Windows Vista/Windows 7:
1. Right click on your desktop and select "Screen Resolution"
2. Slide the bar to change the resolution to either 1024x768 or 1280x1024.
3. Click apply.
For Windows XP:
1. Right click on your desktop and select "Properties"
2. Click on the tab to the far right that says "Settings"
3. Under Screen Resolution, slide the bar to change the resolution to either 1024x768 or 1280x1024.
4. Click apply.
Either of these resolutions should at least give you picture when you reconnect with HDMI. Once you get a picture, repeat these steps and gradually move the slider higher to get a better resolution picture. If you receive the incompatible signal message again, just wait 15 seconds and the previous setting will be restored.
If this doesn't work, you may also have to adjust the screen refresh rate. From the same window that has the screen resolution adjustment bar, click the link or button that says "Advanced." The second tab, "Monitor," has a drop-down menu to adjust the screen refresh rate. Depending on your HDTV, the most common setting for this could be 60 Hz, 70 Hz, or 120 Hz. If none of those values work for you, you should check the manual that came with your TV to check what the proper resolution and refresh rate should be for your computer connection.
This is more of an alternative than a solution... but I solved my problem by getting a dvi to hdmi adapter and connecting to my mac desktop via hdmi. Once I then turned off the overscan in the menu I got a perfect 1080p image. Hope this helps. :-)
Try turning both pc and tv off and connect, then turn both on. Also, make sure your Display setting are correctly configured. Goto Control Panel, Display and click on Settings Tab. If your still having trouble. Try changing your resolution and make sure that you have your TV to the right input. My TV has 4 HDMI 3 RCA 2Component 1 Digital Optical many USBs...can get kinda confusing. The connection should be numbered. Switch inputs with your remote til you get the right port. Then work on getting your pc to display correctly. Set your aspect ration to 16:9 first. Most tv and laptops are set this way. GOOD LUCK let me know how it goes.
Make sure your TV does indeed support the resolutions you are trying to use. Some low quality HDMI cables can also be troublesome in higher resolution so try one you are sure to work.
Regarding to the desktop only being extended when using the RGB cables, try bringing up the desktop properties window, select the TV as the primary monitor and select "Use this monitor as Primary monitor". You might have to drag the windows Taskbar over to the other monitor, just rightclick the taskbar, uncheck "Lock the Taskbar" and drag it over to the other monitor.
Hope you find this solution helpful, and please rate it if you do so..
