There are two types of Gas Fired Water heaters, depending on the vintage, Older style ones that had a "Pilot" flame that burned gas (a small amount) all of the time, and had a "Button" that had to be pressed as the pilot was warming up the safety lockout, as it was being re-lit, -OR- the more efficient, but more complicated, GLOW START , that turned a piece of tungsten / nichrome red hot to start the main burner. CHECK FOR THE SMELL OF GAS FIRST.... there should never be any, IF THERE IS , STOP (Don't turn on or OFF any other Lights, in the house, open a window to the area, and call your gas company from the Neighbour's house if it is really odorous).

IF the hot water tank is the newer type, you need to get a certified gas repair person there to fix it, because it is GAS, there are a few things to verify before any repairs are done.

IF it is an older model there are instructions ususally on the side, and a trap door to light the pilot where the main feed goes under the tank after the regulator / thermostat.

You will need a long match, but if you have never done it before , check with your gas company first.

Can not get pilot to lite was working fine had to turn off gas will I changed out some water pipe went to relite and could not get pilot to lite

I would first make absolutly sure that I had all air bleed out of gas line to water heater. If you are trying to bleed air out thru pilot assembly this can take a long time because the opening in pilot orifice is very small. To speed up process if you have a union close to unit or flex connector,you can slightly loosen fitting till you can hear a little hiss of escaping air/gas. When you first smell gas immedieatly tighten fitting. Before you do this make sure there are no standing piloy lights or other sources of flame in the vicinity. When you smell gas and tighten fitting back up try to relight pilot to water heater.If you still can't get pilot to light I would remove pilot line from gas valve and burner. Check to see if you can blow thru it, visually inspect pilot orifice, and if blocked I would get a orifice cleaning tool from hardware or welding supply store. Be careful to select the right size for your orifice and clean it. Reinstall and try to light pilot again.Hope this helps. Thanks

Atwood gas waterheater with white rodgers gas valve pilot hard to light and not a big enough flame to touch the thermocouple

I think you need to reposition the thermocouple, or adjust the pilot gas pressure by adjusting the pilot screw make sure it is still the recommended gas pressure of the system... please contact a HVAC tech if this things did not work.

Burner lites but goes out after 2 or 3 min.

the white rodgers gas control needs to be replaced;
the way it works is: the thermocouple opens the pilot gas circuit and, holds it open
when it heats up by creating a magnetic field in the gas control then: when you turn
the knob on the gas control to "on" a valve inside the gas valve opens the main gas circuit and, electricity supplied by your RV keeps it open.
the main gas coil inside the gas valve is defective and, can not hold the main gas circuit to the burner open anymore.

Gvr 40 100 will not stay lite

The Cold air screen on the bottom of the water heater is partially plugged. That is if the pilot light can be lit and stay on, but goes out when the heater should be functioning normally. This is not the removable plastic screen but a round white-yellow grid with 1/32" holes. You can try to clean it through the bottom but you may have to remove the gas line from the controller to the burner, pilot gas line, and thermocouple connection to remove that complete assembly to get access to the screen. The AO Smith booklet warns of this but they pretend the plastic screen will keep this second screen clean but it won't. After three years it was two thirds plugged.
