This sounds like a torque converter , ck you cable to the trans and make sure it is working , you should be getting something even if it is a bad trans , but if it feel like it is in neutral then I would ck the cable and the wire connectors on the trans before I take it somewhere and get ripped off

What could be the problem/ my car is a golf 4 automatic trasnsmission,it started to overhead engine, now the transmission moves slowly after i brake it does not move at all have to switch it off and start...

Good day and welcome to Fixya!
As a first course of action, you may want to replace the automatic transmission fluid and atf filter. If the transmission fluid is burnt this sluggish state or no movement can occur.
If it doesn't resolve the problem, then I believe that you may need to have your transmission rebuilt. Linings and transmission solenoid surely is wornout and needs replacement.
This will surely resolve the issue.
Thank you for using Fixya!

Changed my 2001 vw polo 1.4 automatic transmission fluid and replaced with atf cvt but my car is now changing gears with a jerk please help

This sounds like a linkage issue? Can you clarify a few details, have you removed gear box? And when you say it changing gears like a ####? Is it a clicking noise or a crunching noise?

2001 Dodge ram -2500 automatic. transmission slow to engage, months later started not shifting into 3rd gear, then 1 months later slow to engage into 2nd , now only 1st gear......

sounds like filter could be clogged, if it hasn't been changed in a while. you can try to replace throttle position sencer, it is like your old trans kinkenge system, only now, it is elect. it tells trans when to shift, like your speed sencer on trans doe's. both can make it act like it is.

Very difficult at times to get into gear on my 2007 grand vitara. At times when in gear cannot change gear at all but other times moves through gears freely. What is the problem?

if this is an automatic transmission, check your transmission fluid level. The fluid should be red, if it is orange/ brown colour and smells burnt. Will need to be changed. Take it somewhere to have fluid and filter changed. If you are mechanically inclined try flushing the fluid through the transmission. Disconnedt the driver side transmission cooling rubber line from bottom of rad. place the end of the hose in a large container. Put parking brake on, turn on vehicle and put into drive. the transmision fluid with pump out into container. Watch how fast it pumps out. When the fluids stops coming out, shut off engine and put back into park. Next drain remaining fluid out of transmission pan. There is 9/19 or 14mm bolt for this on bottom side of transmission. When this is done, refill transmission and repeat. This time you are flushing all the extra **** out of the transmission. Again check thre flow rate of the fluid coming out. It will come out faster this time. When finished replace transmission fluid again with new clean fluid. This should help free your shifting. When starting the engine for the first time. Put the brake on and put the shifter in 1st for a few seconds , then 2nd and drive, then reverse. This will also allow the fluid to begin to circulate.
If the transmission fluid was dark brown or black it would be wise to replace filter when you finish flushing transmission. To do this you have to disconnect the 4 wheel drive shaft to get pan off. Try just flushing the transmission first. I will look again in couple of days for your reply.

Automatic transmission won't shift into drive

Check automatic transmission fluid using dipstick, if fluid is low the automatic g/box tend not to shift properly. If the fluid level is fine you probably have an internal gearbox problem or a sensor problem (see a mechanic).

Transmission will not engage 2003 Hundai Accent automatic

Tatter Todd quickly came to the rescue. I followed his guidance of shifting through all gears, circulating and spreading the tranny fluid, being patient, and it worked. I ended up having to add more fluid which fixed the problem.

Thanks!
