Hey there praymoss, if your OS is Mac X, v10.5, scanning from the unit's main operation panel, or from MP navigator / MP Navigator EX may not be performed., You can however bypass the issue by launching scanner drive from the TWAIN application, such as Image capture / Arcsoft Photostudio to perform Scanning. scanning has nothing to do with the printing ...so ...in theory it has to scan just fine without ink at all in the printer ...so ..if you have unexpected errors...probably it has something to do with the operating system and the driver ...so ...first remove with the add /remove software ( control panel ) the driver ...and reinstall it clean ..if this would not fix the problem ....you probably have to reinstall the operating system as well cause it has issues that interfere with the accurate function of the scanner /printer

Go to Google, type in your make and model followed by the word manual to download the pdf. manual and within that you should find all the info you need.

You may not see a paper jam.
This may work for you, it has worked for many here I given this advice so gave it a try it could work for you. Generally when this happens, something has fallen into the printer, or a piece of paper has been jammed in there.
First step, remove the ink cartridge, and turn the printer upside down and gently shake it, see if anything comes out.
If nothing goes, or you can't hear anything rattling around, get a piece of cardstock paper (60lb or heavier) and gently push this through the printer, to see if it will help push out what might be stuck in there.
And gave the rode that the ink slides on a good clean and maybe a bit oil on cloth and wipe the rod with it.

Error ink cartridges are not installed properly (Error E5)
First power off the printer. Next, while holding STOP/RESET button, power on the printer.
While holding POWER button, release STOP/RESET button. Then push STOP/RESET button twice.
Wait about 20-30 second until the LED shows "0?. Then push STOP/RESET button four times.
Finally push POWER button twice. Last step is to turn off the printer by pressing the POWER button one last time.
