Look at serial number located on label on side of tank
1st and 2nd digit are week of the year
3rd and 4th digit are year of manufacture

My 81SV40D was made in 1982. It works fine. I don't want to replace it if I don't have to but I'm afraid it might leak and flood my condo and condos below me. Any suggestions?

Yes I would replace it being it is on borrowed time, but the one that has the longest warranty and I believe you get a better coated tank. I recently bought a Whirlpool at Lowes with a 12 year warranty. Is there a 'pan' under your water heater ?

My 50 gal lp water heater made a slight boom sound and now when i lite it and turn on the main bunner it snuffs its self out

1) Call manufacturer with model number and serial number appearing on label on side of water heater.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-manufacturers.html

2) Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-gas-water-heater.html#intellivent
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-thermocouple.html

3) Product manuals today recommend yearly service, and yearly cleaning of combustion parts, and to keep air intake clean.
If air intake becomes clogged, or combustion parts get dirty, it can slow the exit of combustion gasses, and this will soot the burner, and clog burner ports, which means slow lazy yellow flame and incomplete burning of released gas. So unburned gas is present in combustion chamber and up the flueway. The ignition of unburned gas can cause explosion of various intensity ... and the 'boom' sound you heard.

The explosion certainly overheated combustion chamber and tripped FVIR system.

4) Since each manufacturer has different FV system (flammable vapor ignition retardation system), and each manufacturer has continued to make changes over time in FV systems, the solution for tripped FV will vary by brand and age and model of water heater.
For example the intellivent gas control can be reset in some models, while other models require replacement of parts ranging from gas control valve to FV sensor to glass vial, and include possibly full replacement of water heater.

MY Rheem 81SV40D Water Heater (47 gal) does not heat enough water. Approximately one bath worth.

You have dual-element 240Volt electric water heater.
Since you have some hot water, then we know upper element is good, and that circuit breaker and electricity to water heater are good.
Not enough hot water is probably bad lower element, and possibly sediment build-up in bottom of tank.
Test element:

Replace 4500 watt element available at local hardware, and clean out bottom of tank:

How do i determine the manufacture date for a h w heater, serial # GE0801269835 - model # GE 20P6A Thank you Mark Stambach City of Auburn Maine Plumbing Inspector

GE uses MMYY as the first four digits of their serial numbers. That unit was manufactured in August 2001.

FYI, a nice little page on decoding water heater manufacture can be found here.

RHEEM 40 GAL ELEC TALL Water Heater 6YR SC 82VH402: my rheem 81sv40d water heater quit heating water. ...

I have the same problem about every 3-4 months. Mine is also about 10 or 11. It is usually the sediment at the bottom that causes this. Once the plumber flushes it, it works again. My problem is that I dont know how he did it and the vavle is at the floor level. I am never home when it is repaired. Regular maintenance (flushing) is how you avoid this from reoccurring. That is, if that is the cause of your issue.

My rheem water heater doesn't seem to be heating the water. I have a Rheem model 81SV40D and the water is not hot and doesn't seem to get hot. I have checked the dials on the water heater and they are set...

try setting the bottom 10 degrees hoter than the top could be in short cycle (thatis the bottom calls for heat on the bottom element and set too close so goes back to top and cycles off
