I usually rest a straight edge, flat hardwood across the drum.

Rotate the drum by hand/pencil tip, till the blade is top dead center..
It should lift the hardwood 1mm.
Tighten the fixings.

Rotate and repeat for remaining blades.

SOURCE: FITTING DETAILS FOR MAKITA PLANER BLADES

It depends on the planer blade set that you are using. If you are using the the 2 sided blades there is a guage that goes with it to set the blade depth before installing. I would strongly recommend that you go to Makitatools.com and type in your model number and download a copy of the owners manual for specific instructions. Let me know if you have any problems finding them

Take the belt to auto parts store and ask them to measure and give you a belt. The clerk will ask you what it came off of. It does not matter a belt of that length is used in many different applications. I took a belt to AZ and asked for a belt and was asked did it come off of, I told him a 1947 Atlas Drill Press and he started looking for that not realizing that it was not a car. The manager and I just shook our heads. You can go to YouTube and view how to measure belt and go to ebay and buy one I have done both for belts

Severe sniping with planer

You will always have snipe at the end of planed boards equal to the distance from your infeed and outfeed rollers. It's severity is determined by how much the board sags or dropps behind the planer until the second roller catches the board. Some planers have extended tables to help with this. What you can do is hold the board up as much as possible and still let the infeed roller move the board smoothly until the board contacts the outfeed roller.

Planer will not get up to speed

I suspect that the works are clogged up with wood chips or some long fibers like hair or string. You will have to do enough disassembly so that you can pull out the chips that are wrapped around the shafts, without removing the blades or any of the shafts themselves. The motor, the cutter, and the feed rollers could all be clogged up - as well as the speed reducing mechanism that makes the feed rollers turn slowly. Using compressed air will not do the trick. Needle-nosed pliers and a nut-pick will probably do it. Hair can be hard to see - so be thorough in cleaning. Good luck.

Howdo I change and install the new blades on my 12" dewalt bench planer

My experience of Dewalt planers is that they have unusually got a setting device with them and the instructions will be in the manual and sometimes even on the machine itself.
Otherwise I think Dewalt are usually very helpful if you have a problem.
