Question about Garmin nuvi GPS
You can delete an old map by connecting the unit up to your PC, using a USB to mini-USB cable. Once the Nuvi shows up as a valid drive letter in windows, double click on the drive and then go to the Garmin directory. Look for the file named gmapprom.img. It should be a file near 1 GB. Right click on the file and select delete.
This will delete the map. Warning, once you do this, your GPS will no longer function and you will need to install a new map.
Before you delete it, always make a backup of the map file on your PC.
Once you are finished, be sure to SAFELY remove the drive in Windows BEFORE you remove the USB cable.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Asmany as there are FREE dinners Updates are not free, unless you paid full price for it when you bought it. Free upgrades are a deceptive myth. If you get a free uograde its usually minor and was included in the price of the pack.

I had the same problem. I called Garmin and the lady said if I had the software Map Source or something, that can do the trick, but the funny thing is you have to buy the software with Map Updates, or you get the software when you buy a new unit, and register the unit within 60 days of first satellite reception. Though I searched internet and someone said to copy a certain file/folder or I'd rather just copy the whole GPS folders and that might do the trick. You are right, this is a pain in the rear end.

I've looked for free map upgrades for my Garmin and could not find anything. I did find a lifetime map upgrade deal for around $75. It allows you unlimited upgrades for as long as you own the GPS. Go to the garmin site and search NUMaps.

The simple way is to send the unit to Garmin they will load the maps for free.
If you keep trying - try this -
With your thumb in the lower right corner of the screen - pushing in - like there is an X there - [ push with your thumb before you turn it on] Turn it on -
when this screen comes up - push YES -
then try your maps.
If they do not load on your pc [ which must have the unit hooked up and a legit copy of the newest maps ] then send the unit to Garmin. They will load your maps for you FREE.
