I have a Powermate 0477023 7000watt gen. The idle switch will not bring it down to idle.

The engine was skipping or sputtering on the high side when running. removed fuel hoses and check for cracks. Replace fuel filter. Took spark plugs out to to check gap, nice and light brown they were replaced two years ago. Removed fuel tank and check air filter. Drained fuel and replaced with fresh, and added fuel treatment. It was idling great now it goes right up to high speed.Idle switch doesn't seem to be working when engaging.

Hi,
I just want you to try this.
Take the air filter off
clean the carb bowl.
Take carb cleaner and spray directly into carb.
Check the gas lines that they are clear.

The carburetor.
The problem may be that the carburetor is may be blocked up not letting fuel get through. Sometimes they are very hard to clean and get them to run correct, you need to use a magnifying glass and remove the jest and look at the passages closely, Or get your engine model numbers and id and go price a carburetor. Thats is the best fix.

What brand of engine & horsepower is it?Also about how long was it stored or last time it was run? The reason I ask is if it was stored with gas in it & a fuel stabilizer wasn't added to it,your primary jet is plugged in the carburetor(reason it will only run while choked).

ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!

Sounds like you missed the low speed jets when you cleaned the carb. They are very small holes and sometimes are behind a plug either rubber or brass.

Idle control comes into play when there is no power draw forcing the engine to idle with an electro magent. If you feel that the electro magnet is interfering with governor, temp remove the wire to the solenoid. Usually the idle control will not effect how the engine /gen output power. An overloaded condition will cause the engine the go the full throttle as the internal governor of the engine will try to maintain 3600 rpm. Overloaded condition will greatly shorten the life of the generator/engine. Try to use only about 80 % of rated power. Large motors can draw three times running amps. A compressor using 12 to 18 amps to run can draw over 40 amps to start.
If your generator could handle the load in the past, check the engine for loss of power, or the generator for faulty voltage regulator or capacitors out of range. Easy to check. Connect digital volt meter to plug /load and look at volt reading while running with no load and loaded. Voltage should stay between 110 to 120 under load and with no load (unless goes into idle mode). Good luck

More detailed information about the engine can be found by using the engine model number. Look around the fan shroud or engine block. Coleman used different engnes, however your gen may have incorporated a Tecumseh 10 hp engine. Good luck

When my 1991 geo storm warms up the idle skips around.... it doesnt stall out it just sputters and gos from high to low idle


Sounds like your idle air control, or IAC valve. Take it off and clean it out with some brake cleaner. Carbon deposits and gunk can build up and prevent the IAC valve from operating properly, by causing it to stick. If cleaning it doesn't work, you may have to just replace it. It happened to me on my Sentra, tripping my check engine light, sputtering hard, idled crazy, no power, etc. But once I cleaned it off, it ran so smooth. You'll need to get a replacement gasket, though, or make your own out of gasket paper.

Do you have the model and spec number for the engine?

Is it the high speed or idle adjustment?

Rule of thumb for high speed it turn in til snug and back of 1.5 turns; idle is 1 turn. Start engine and adj to ear.

When I start the motor it runs on high idle and the blade starts to spin without hitting the trigger... When I hit the trigger it sputters and turns off...


I don't know if your saw has adjustable needles on the carb, but if it does, the "low" side needle needs to be turned counterclockwise about 1/8 to 1/4 turn. THis will richen up the idle mixture which will take care of the sputtering, and should also bring down the idle speed.

Coleman Powermate 3000 surging


Check your air filter to make sure it is clean, especially if the gen. has been run in dirty, dusty conditions. Make sure the gas tank vent is not clogged.

Also, pour some combustion cleaner into the carb. through the air intake to clean the carb. It sounds like it is starving for gas.

My 02 yz250f has a very erratic idle. When slowing down it stays in a very high idle until it eventually dies down itself or i use the kill switch to bring it back to idle. Jetting is all perfect, ignition...


what you need to do is turn the screw on the right side of the engine with a flat head with the bike running it is suppose to bring the idle up or down... if not then take it to a mechanic before your engine blows. I to have had that before but it is simple to fix

Three year old coleman 5000/6250 generator. High


Your RPM's are too high. There is no voltage regulator in coleman generators (generator is actually made by generac) and is 100% dependent on engine speed. There is a screw under the tank when your looking in from the recoil side. It controls the governor arm. Screw it in and it incresses the rpm, out decrease. Plug something in that draws a decent load while setting the rpms since you want it to put out 120 and 240 underload. Your idle voltage does not matter.

you can probably get a off/ on switch at your local small engine repair shop. it probably can be any switch for a gen.
