Question about Electrical Supplies
Turn off the main breaker controlling the power to the home. This will ensure that the wires at the 220-volt switch are not powered before working on them
Remove the cover from the old 220-volt switch with your straight screwdriver. Also, remove the screws that are holding the switch into the box. Pull the switch and wires out of the box so that the connections are accessible.
Identify the two sets of wires in the switch box, a red and a black pair, in the same conduit or insulated sheath. You should be able to see which wires are going to the device, or load. The line side is the other set of wires coming from the breaker.
Loosen the screws that hold the wires onto the switch. Pull all of the wires off of the old switch. Inspect the new 220-volt switch and identify the connection screws marked line and load.
Strip 3/4-inch of insulation from the ends of all four wires if they aren't already. Curl the tips of the stripped wires. Wrap the curled ends clockwise around the screws so that tightening the screw makes the wires wrap tighter.
Connect the black and red hot wires, or line, to the side of the switch marked "Line," usually the darker set of screws. Connect the two wires that are going to the device, or load, to the two screws marked as "Load" on the switch, usually the lighter colored screws on the switch.
Connect the bare ground wire, if there is one, to the green grounding screw on the switch. Push the wires and switch into the electrical box. Install the two screws that hold the switch into the box. Replace the switch cover and turn the main breaker back on.
