Question about Kohler Electrical Supplies

1 Answer

I have a 17 kW kohler generator. When the power goes out it comes on fine. When the power comes back on the transfer switch transfers back to utility power but the generator never shuts off. I have let it run for up to 30 minutes because I now that there is a cool down period of about 15 minutes. I have checked the fuses and all the connections and my battery charger is working properly. Thoughts?

If unit is over 8 years old it has a mechanicial timer for the Cool down run time (after power comes on) these go bad from believe it not "Rust" the timer will need to be replaced with a new model , that most likely will be an electronic timer replacement , now if unit is less than 8 years old . and this is a new install then verify that ,Sense connection on terminal strip on ckt board is connected to land power

SOURCE: transfer switch will not switch back to utility

The transfer switch should transfer back to utility within about 30 sec. after utility is restored. While waiting for the transfer switch to switch back to utility volatge. Check for DC volatge across wires 23 and 194 in the transfer switch, if you have battery voltage(12-13.5 VDC) then you you probably have a stuck relay on the PC board in the generator. The board needs to be replaced. If you don't have battery voltage across these terminals then your problem is actually in the transfer switch.

SOURCE: Asco transfer switch does not

Same problem here with the ASCO 165, after a couple of fierce lightning strikes yesterday that did over $10k damage to my neighbor's electronics, and also took out my garage door opener.

I'm pretty confident the control board is the problem, but I don't plan to try to replace components. Will probably opt for a new control board from ASCO, or another source, assuming they are still available.

SOURCE: I have a Briggs & Stratton Automatic Home

It sounds like the mains sense wire is disconected from the control panel or the run wire is not being cut by the aux contact on the transfer switch.
Is the transfer switch manual or motorised?

have an electrician check the relay that is activated when the utility power fails
that is what starts the genset when it is in auto
it should also stop the get set when utility power comes back on

I have a Taylor Perkins 150 KW generator on chicken houses. It will start on manual but not on automatic. Once started manually it won't transfer thru transfer switch.

Go the transfer switch and locate the 2 DC control wires that go to your generator for remote start.(On the remote start terminals) If you jumper these wires in the transfer switch and it starts, then the problem is with the transfer switch. If it still won't start check the wiring from the switch back to the generator, if all ok then suspect the generator control board. I would recommend you have an electrician do this, as there is line utility power in the switch and is dangerous !

Try disconencting the remote start wires between the transfer switch and the generator, if ot still does it you have a bad control board. If it stops, then check the transfer switch for correct wiring of utility and generator power wires, also check with an ohm meter if the run contacts in the transfer switch are closed, that would indicate loss of sensing, or bad board

Although A bit inconvienent this does seem to be the norm for some Kohler units. Actually a small price to pay rather than having a technician come out to replace the ATS control board. There are time delays that could be set longer to keep the unit running longer and may prevent this from happenng
