Question about Heating & Cooling
It normally means that the external unit is overheating,but if the unit doesn't work at all then it sounds strange, i would advise in both cases to get the technical service center in to check it out, if you have a gas leak , it will run a while then stop, but if you havent got the gear to check it out get the service center in.

Not enough air being drawn over the outside condenser unit. This could be for a number of reasons. The unit may be covered, restricted, or blocked. The condensor fan may be inoperable on the unit. Without a model number I would first check the outdoor fan for proper operation, and contactor and run capacitor. It sounds as though the compressor is coming on and going into thermal overload.
