If the pilot is going out, it may be from lack of combustion air intake. Make sure you have fresh air in the water heater room...one within 18 inches from the ceiling, & one within 18 inches from the floor. The size of the openings is determined by the BTU's of the water heater.

My water heater pilot light won't stay lit

I would try cleaning the thermo couple surfaces with some steel wool... Both where the flame contacts the sensor, and the electrical contacts. Even a small increase in voltage may be enough to hold the pilot valve open. Both black, and white soot on the sensor end, can act as an temperature insulator, lowering the output voltage.

Why does the flame shut off before a hot to warm temperature can be achieved

I would question the Thermo couple. It pretty much runs the whole show. Inexpensive quick fix. It's the small tubing that is connected to the gas valve. The other end is a bulb that sits over the pilot flame.. Remove the old and match it up at the hardware store. Install new coupler ensuring bulb is directly over the pilot flame Common iten. The thermocoupler alks to the gas valve. If the pilot flame extinguishes (goes out) the bulb cools and shuts down the gas valve so the pilot gas feed doesn't permit raw gas to accumulate, avoiding the need emergency Services. . You will not get the heater to fire until the bulb is good and hot. The red push button ,when depressed will allow the pilot flame to be lit. Hold it down until the heater fires, indicating the T-coupler has reached its operating temp.Good Luck-Ned

The pilot won't stay lit on gas hot water tank.

Make sure thermocouple tip is seated inside the burner flame.
Make sure thermocouple is not overtightened. Finger-tight + 1/4 turn.
If the pilot lights, then ECO energy cut off is not tripped, but gas control valve might be bad.
Check color of pilot flame: it should be strong and clear blue.
If pilot flame is weak, or color of flame is yellow-orange: Clean pilot orifice and burner and combustion parts on yearly basis.
Clean air intake screen if applicable.
Increase air supply to water heater. Open a window and see what happens.
Check for adequate draft going up chimney using match under vent hood to see if smoke drafts immediately upwards.
Bleed air out of gas line.
Check gas pressure.

Rheem 22V50F1 pilot won't stay lit. Changed thermo couple & it lit, ran then went out. Let it sit overnight & it lit, ran then went out. What next? p.s. The unit is 5 years old. Thanks

If pilot lights and flame is robust and clear blue, and pilot goes out later, then some suspects can be excluded: air in gas line, low gas pressure, thermocouple is overtightened (finger-tight + 1/4 turn), thermocouple not positioned correctly in the flame, dirty pilot tube.
If flame is yellowish and small: then clean pilot tube and combustion parts.

Remaining suspects can include: air in gas line, low gas pressure, bad gas control valve, tight house so household vent fans pull air down water heater vent that blows out pilot, hot attic with inadequate ventilation, water dripping down vent.

Enviro temp hot water heater. 1 week ago pilot out. Able to relight but would go out again once water heated to temp. Replaced thermal couple (tc) with same result. replaced gas therm/valve (t/v). ...

Remove your entire pilot assembly from the heater and gas valve. Remove the aluminum gas line that feeds the pilot assembly. There is a small orifice inside the pilot assembly that may or may not fall out when you take the line off. If it does not fall out remove it and be sure that the very small holes in the top of it are clear. It sounds to me like even though the flame is blue and in contact with the thermo-couple, when the main flame turns off it causes the pilot flame to wave away from the thermo-couple thus shutting it down due to a weak pilot. I have run into this several times and should do the trick.

My water heater (model # PTG-74PVP-2) keeps shutting off and flashing C7 76. If I turn it off and back on it will stay on for a little while and then shuts its self back off.

Does your Water Heater have a pilot to light the main flame?
Here is what I usually send to those with Pilot lights, and Thermo Couple problems:

One possibility is that the Thermo Couple is beginning to fail'
What is a Thermo Couple? (TC)
The Thermo Couple (TC) is a small Rod-shaped device with a couple wires coming out the bottom.
The TC actually generates a small electrical current from the heat of the Pilot.
This electrical current is sensed by the control board, or the Main Gas Valve.
As long as there is a pilot, it is safe for the Main gas valve to open, and admit the large amount of gas into the heating burner.

Now-- What helps this TC work the best?
It needs to be just at the edge of the pilot flame--- Not too much in the flame, or the resulting poor combustion of the pilot flame, results in soot forming on the TC-- which insulated the TC from sufficient heat.
Obviously the TC has to be clean (of soot) in order to receive enough heat, to generate the needed voltage to tell the valve that it is safe to open.
And age does deteriorate the TC-- some last a few years, but that is about the end of life for most.
Replacing requires getting down where the TC is, and with a screw driver (usually)-- lossening the bracket that holds the TC. Pay attention to where the wires are routed, and any polarity indicated on the old wires, and duplicate on the new one. Duplicate routing, and polarity, and position the new TC at the edge of the pilot flame.
Pilot flame is maintained by pushing some over ride button-- for a minute or two, until when you begin to release the button, you can feel that the voltage generated by the TC is now holding the pilot valve open, instead of your pressure on the 'start' button.

Pilot would not keep lit. Bought a new thermal coupling and installed it and pilot still goes out when you release the knob. White Rogers coupling. Do I need a bigger hammer?

I take it is on an RV?

The placement of the thermo coupler would be important - but no bigger hammer required... lol

be sure your connections are good and nothing got pinched off...

Alternatively there are some systems which have a lock out which may have happened and you might need a reset or otherwise let it cool down completely

or it might not have been the thermo coupler to begin with...

I have a rheem fury 50gal gas water heater that will not stay on. I have replaced the thermo couple, it did lite but then went out.

I would like to know how old this heater is. This information can be found on either model or serial numbers. It won't appear obvious but last six numbers will tell you. You have already changed thermo-couple so I would check to see that it's properly centered in pilot flame. When you light it hold pilot button down for two-three mins.while watching thermo-couple.It should be a nice cherry red. If it is and pilot goes out after you release button then you either have another bad thermo-couple or gas valve is bad.If it does not get cherry red at least on tip then you need to reposition thermo-couple and try again. If gas valve is bad and heater is less then six years old valve will be covered under warrenty, however labor won't typically be covered unless you have extened service contract.Hope this helps.Thanks.

Hi Our gas water heater is not igniting

you need to replace the thermocouple its an electronic device that keep the gas flowing . the pilot light is always on and the thermo couple controls the flame. if it goes bad the flame goes out and the burner wont come on to heat the water, they are easy to replace and available at all home depot or a lowes kind of store.
