Question about Frigidaire Refrigerators

1 Answer

Compressor runs and puts out the correct amp no., all fans run, coils clean but freezer and refrigerator maintains a steady 50 degrees and frost forms on first coil only of evaporator. Frigidaire mode

Replaced relay switch with hard start 3 in one. Cleaned all coils (which I do on a regular basis so see no issue there). Ran amperage test on compressor and it registers normal (6). Model number is FRS26H5ASB4. Compressor is Tecumseh.

Hello Suza;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service technician.

I am sorry for the bad news. You have a restriction in your seal system. You should have a even frost pattern on all of the evaporator coils. You probably have a large block of ice in the upper right corner of your evaporator coil. The is where your capillary tube is. It is a small tube where the high pressure (165 PSI) liquid side turns to the low pressure (65 PSI) vapor. The thru hole in this tube is about the size of a small sewing needle. Broken down refrigerant or oil from the compressor can plug this tube.

You may have a refrigerant leak at tubing joints. If you feel an oily substance around the joint you have a leak.

Purchase your next unit at a Sears Outlet Store. You get a full year service contract and will save a couple of hundred dollars.

The part in your unit are probably worth a couple of hundred dollars. Strip the unit and sell them on Ebay. When you remove the control boards ground your self by touching something that is steel. Static electricity will knock out a board.

Freezer only gets down to around 18 degrees but fridge is fine. No frost on the freezer evaporator fan is running

Modern consumer refrigerators only have coils in the freezer. In the lower back of the freezer there is a small fan and possible a damper (flap that opens/closes) to push cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator. Given that the freezer is 18 deg, it's probably cold enough to keep the fridge area at typically 34 deg.
So the cooling system (compressor, coils, thermostat) are not working properly to keep the freezer at, typically 0 deg. Possible causes: partial loss of refrigerant gas, icing around evaporator coils (in freezer), compressor failing, dust clogging condenser coils (under fridge), condenser fan clogged or broken (under fridge), thermostat failure.
I'd start with condenser. Remove the slotted trim at the bottom front and look in with a flashlight. Are the coils clean? Pull out the fridge and remove the lower back cover (usually cardboard). You can now see the coils and fan. Clean and blow them out.
If it's icing, it probably means freezer door not closing tight. If auto-defrost not working properly it would probably get worse over the period of a few days so not likely.

GE Profile Side-by-Side running warm

If it's cutting off at too high a temperature it is a good possibility the probe is faulty. However if the compressor is not cutting off at all, suspect short of gas.

sounds like the compressor is not running. The condenser fans are located at the compressor. The fans in the conditioned space are the evap fans. A refrig usually does not have any device controlling the evap fans, they are to run 24/7. Freezers have other controls. Start there and let me know if I can help further.

Doesn't cool as much as it should -- freezer, on

Does this model have a condenser fan that blows air over the condenser coil(coil on the bottom of the unit)? If it does then does the fan run?The fan has to circulate air over the coil to remove the heat from it. If the fan doesn't run then the compressor will overheat and cycle off then on on the internal thermal limit inside the compressor and the system will never come close to cooling as it should.

Freezer not freezing

when the freezer is not freezing, check the fan and fan motor in the freezer section. It should be running when the compressor is running. Check for frost. If you see frost on the rear inside panel, the frost is usually about 3 in. thick on the inside. Check and make sure the fan next to the compressor is running, if your's has one. It will run when the compressor is running. Check for gaps in your door gasket. If there is no frost, both fans are running, compressor is running, and no gaps, and your coils outside the refrigerator are clean, it doesn't sound good.
