SOURCE: Just won't start

check the spark plug after a failed attempt to start. If dry, then no fuel is entering engine.
Did you leave old fuel in carb? if so, your carb probably is dirty: old gasoline deposits varnish, gum, and you will need to dissassemble carb and clean it.

SOURCE: My troy-Bilt 5550 watt generator will not start

First drain the fuel bowl. Any old fuel in there will keep it from starting. Fuel stabilizer is not what it's it cracked up to be. I've worked for 6yrs at a rental yard and had no luck with any fuel stabilizer, the fuel still went bad. If after you drain the fuel bowl it still will not start, you will need to clean the carb. Remove the carb and spray carb cleaner through all the accessible passages. If this does not do it, you will need to replace the carb. For long term storage I highly recommend draining all the fuel and filling just the carb with fuel stabilizer to keep gaskets moist. Then drain the carb when you take it out of storage.

SOURCE: Generator with Briggs & Stratton,no gas is getting in carburetor

The needle valve may be stuck which would not let gas into the carb. I don;t think rebuild kits are too expensive. Pull the carb and take it to a lawnmower repair shop and they should have the parts. Before that though pull the bowl and make sure it has gas in it. If no then remove the fuel line and make sure gas flows from it. If no then could be the fuel shutoff valve is not operating properly or junk in the gas tank is obstructing the line.

SOURCE: troy bilt 5550 generator no start please help

fuel, fire, mechanical. Miss one and she won;t run. Are you sure the gas was good? Not some old can laying around that may have turned or become water contaminated? If it was fresh gas, then take off the air cleaner and spray a little wd-40, or ether, or brake cleaner whatever is flammable into the carb throat. Just a 1 second shot is all it should need. Try and start with that. If it starts and then dies quickly, still a fuel problem. maybe a gasket is damaged, or the jet is clogged. When you said you checked for fire, you acutally took the plug out and had it grounded while spinning the motor and saw spark? If you saw a hot spark then you have eliminated fire. Mechanical not likely if it was running well a short time before. If a valve was damaged, it would still run but not too well. My gut feeling is it is related to fuel.

Hard starting

Good morning Marty.

I don't know your specific model, but have rarely seen a chainsaw that doesn't get persnickety at times.
You've been able to get it running, which means you have gas, a spark, and air. The next questions would then be:
  1. Are you running on gas that's been sitting for a long time? If so, get some new gas and mix the right amount of 2-stroke oil in, as recommended by your manual.
  2. Have you checked that you have bar oil? There's a second reservoir for the chain/bar lube oil. Make sure you're not dry there. If you are, you'll generate a lot of friction and heat between chain and bar, can gum up the chain with wood debris, and will start damaging your saw quickly.
  3. Can you rev the saw once started? If you can rev it to higher RPMs and get the chain to engage, (and hopefully be able to see a fine spray of oil coming off the far end of the blade), then the saw can run and cut. If you let off on the gas and it slows down and then dies, you likely need to adjust the idle. There will probably be an indent on the side of the saw with labels like 'Lo' and 'Hi' or 'Idle' 'Cut' or some such. Try turning the 'lo' screw a quarter turn, probably clockwise. Try starting / idling the saw and see if it sounds better or worse. If worse, undo the quarter turn and go a quarter turn the other way. Keep track of how many turns you do. If there's really no change, return the screw to the original position. if it improves, still keep track and then leave at a position where the idle runs acceptably.
  4. You could have a clogged fuel or air filter. Restricted fuel or air flow could make the ignition dodgy, and not enough to maintain idle at low RPMs. Cleaning or replacing the filter(s) may help. Chainsaws generate prodigious clouds of wood dust, and that can foul a filter, especially an air filter, really quickly.
  5. Fouled spark plug. likewise, lame spark can also make for lackluster ignition and inability to idle well. Pull the plug, examine it for fouling, and check that it's properly gapped. Clean, gap, and/or replace as seems prudent. See if that makes a difference.
Hoping this may help!

I have a McCulloch I385L trimmer that wont stay running

Try changing the gas to oil mix. You have too much oil in gas. Put more gas in to oil ratio. 25:1 should work. 25 parts oil to 1 liter of gas.
50:1, 50 parts oil to 1 gallon of gas. 4 liters to 1 gallon.

11 hp 5700 watt generator wont fire

If you could not start in spite of oil and gas change, checked gas supply, spark plug, ignition cables and coils (magnetos) and so on whitout success, then try this:
Your generator has a low oil level protection, which stops the ignition of the motor.
After "a couple of years" sitting without or with old oil, the level switch may have got lazy or stuck down.
If your oil level seems to be good, while measured, find the oil switch and try to shorten or disconnect it.
If you succeed in running the generator change or repair the oil switch.

I hope that this will be helpful, because I don't have your device in front of me, but some people rank such an answer with 2 thumbs, which means useless. Better dont rank.

Most likely your carb. is gummed up. Drain out any old gas [over one month old] and replace with new. Change the spark plugs. And, add a carbeurator cleaner [ from any autoparts store]. Then start it up and let it run, restart it and let it run, restart it and let it run until it will run for as long as you want it to.

If there is a spark, then it's probably the timing, which is either, too far advanced, or retarded.
Good luck with that.
