There should be a input for powered sub on bar, will have black input, and be labeled. Or check your reciever for sub output.

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR500 Dolby Digital problem

I just read over the problem you were having with your Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. It sound like the unit needs to be setup for all five channels.Sence your symptom says the diplay shows Dolby D3/2.1. According to the owners manual with the remote control look for speaker setup whin the button is pressed the current speaker setup will be shown in the display. Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SV525 Receiver subwoofer pre out no sound

Yes turing on the "A" speaker is required for the Onkyo, but that only turns on the 2 front speakers in the "A" speaker jacks.

You may also need to check and see if the Onkyo has a menu selection in the setup menu that will turn on the sub woofer output on the back of the receiver.

I have seen on countless occasions where people just have a hard time finding that sub woofer option on their receiver.

I do not have the manuals for this Onkyo, so I can not tell you the exact way to find it.

I have been repairing surround receivers since they have been on the market and beleive me, you are not alone in this situation.

Sometimes it seems like you need a Phd. in programming or something similar just to firgure out how to set one of these up.

The solution should be in your owners manual, with the problem then being, just where in the manual. Go slowly thru it paying the closest attention to anything about set up procedures.

I have also seen at times where the setup for the sub-woofer is not listed as sub-woofer, but as "LFE" (low frequency effect) . So keep your eyes open for that.

something else, your sub woofer may have an auto turn on. That means it will only turn on if it detects an input signal. Make sure yo uhave the volume up enough on the receiver to trigger that auto turn on if yours has one.

I would like to have been more help, but without the manuals I can only give you general type thngs to look for. These type of receivers are all so different and all so complicated to operate. The days of just turning on a stereo, selecting your source and turning up the volume seem to be over.

Let me know if you need any more assistance from me.

Dave

p.s. Very nice system you have, when you get the Kef working I think you are going to just love this system. and Onkyo has the best quality receivers in their price range.

SOURCE: No sound from Sub Pre-out on Onkyo TX-SR606

Also, it could possibly the preout terminal itself that is not working. One way to prove that is by transferring the subwoofer cable from the preout and temporarily transfer it to the tape out section. If it ouputs sound from there, then that means the speaker and the cables are working fine and it's just the preout terminal itself that is not picking up anything. ^_^

SOURCE: Powered Or Unpowered Subwoofers For Onkyo TX-8511

Greg- Powered subs are better than non-powered subs (also known as passive subs), anyway I see the TX-8511 has no sub pre-out on the back panel, so you need to decide what sub you will use and run from the receivers left and right speakers output into a subwoofers speaker in from speakers then back out to speakers, look at the back of a subwoofer and you will see like 4 sets of speaker hookups 2 in and 2 out, what this does is takes the low end or bass and drops the signal to the subwoofer then takes the mids and highs out to your left and right speakers, unless your regular left and right stereo speakers have large woofers a sub is the way to go.

I have a true sunfire sub and an onkyo 703 that has an rca connection for the sub. My question is do I connect my side channel polk 65's directly to the sub in jacks or directly to the reciever? If

The input jacks on the subwoofer panel are for connection of satellite speakers to it's crossover. The outputs are for the crossed over signal input to your receiver or amplifier, as there will be no amplification or channel processing from the subwoofer connection. It's only an optional crossover that may have a sonic advantage over the crossover in your receiver.

What you also can do is connect the speakers directly to the 703 and set the crossover frequency on it.

I have just set up my onkyo 5305 i only have sound to front speakers have checked connection but im lost now in the settings

Onkyo are known for having 2 seperate connections for the rear speakers. 1 set for a surround sound, channel "A", and 1 set for seperate set a speakers, channel "B". check for the second set of connections. Also, your only gonna get sound out of the rear speakers thru surround sound mode when the unit actually sends singal. The sound is determined buy what setting you have the receiver set to.

Hey , with the Onkyo TX-NR1000 can I get started plugging two speaker while I gather enough money to buy the surround sound speakers. Also your opinion on speaker choices is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sure you can only connect 2 speakers. As for brand recommendation Polk audio makes some fine sounding speakers also Klipsch, Boston acoustics, too many to suggest. If you have a Best Buy near you they usually have a speaker room with many different brands that you can listen to. Though that doesn't mean you have to buy them their. I'm partial to Polk audio though. Polk has excellent customer service. That's going to be a tough decision you should really do some research on the internet for cost to quality references. Good luck. I hope this gets you pointed in the right direction.

Garbled / feedback sounds from powered subwoofer

The surround processing portion of the unit has a problem. In either stereo or direct mode, the digital procesing is bypassed. This could be just the surround processing IC, but that IC may not be available as a separate part. I would suggest that you bring this unit to an authorized Onkyo service center for an estimate.

Onkyo TX-SR304

Onkyo offers access to manuals at their web site. HERE is a link to the receiver line.

Personally, I'd connect the speakers to main left/right. The subwoofer to subwoofer out. The Go VIdeo unit to VCR/Video 1, the cable box to Video 2 and the video output to the Sony TV composite input. No need to connect the TV audio out to the receiver since the audio feed comes from the cable box.
