DHCP Server configuration in Linux

Linux is a UNIX based operating system. It is a server operating system. REDHAT Linux is Enterprise version of Linux. Now a day's Most of corporate sectors use red hat Linux as server in their company because it is secure very much.

Full form of DHCP "Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. DHCP server assigns IP addresses and other network configuration information like subnet mask, broadcast address, etc to computers on a network. The DHCP assignments are the following.

Lease Request: Client broadcasts their request to DHCP server with a source address of 0.0.0.0 and a destination address of 255.255.255.255.
IP lease offer: DHCP server replies with an IP address, subnet mask, network gateway, name of the domain, name servers, duration of the lease and the IP address of the DHCP server.

Lease Selection: Client receives offer and broadcasts to al DHCP servers that will accept given offer so that other DHCP server need not make an offer.

The DHCP server then sends an ack to the client. The client is configured to use TCP/IP. Lease Renewal: When half of the lease time has expired, the client will issue a new request to the DHCP server.

Installation of DHCP server: First of all while install the RedHat Linux enterprise version server be careful about the ports and the services must be turned on. To create DHCP server in Linux first download DHCP RPM package and install with "rpm-ivh" command. Where I have done it there I have create YUM server, so easily I have download and install it by YUM (yum install dhcp version). DHCP package will locate in /usr/share/doc/at Linux file system. I copied the DHCP's files from /usr/share/doc/ to /etc/dhcpd.conf.. Then I started to configure the dhcpd.conf file to route the DHCP server in there local network. I have open the configuration file with "vi" command. Then commented out the lines from "default gateway to option netbios" because system don't read the commented lines. After that I set the range of IP address in dynamic- bootp of their local assumption of system. I have change the "next-server" with the dhcp server name and have also change the fixed address with the dhcp server IP address (end range of dynamic IP). It is very easy job to configure DHCP server. After configure the .conf file of dhcp just turn on the service with "chkconfig" command and restart the dhcp service. After that entire job I reboot the system. And after rebooting of server I turned on the other client system. While startup the client system without static IP address all of those picked up IP from dhcp server and going on successfully. I have prefer the command line mode to do the total job.
The DHCP server configure file is following:

ddns-update-style interim
ignore client-updates

subnet 192.168.1.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
# The range of IP addresses the server

I have 20 nos of L300 device, each client has its own printer. The problem is that when I connect two printers of same model say hp laser jet 2014 on two different clients ,the printer does not work it shows...

The way the NComputing solution works, all the users are sharing the same host. So when you connect two printers, it's as if two printers are connected to that one host PC. When suing the USB port on the L300 you may have issues every time the device disconnects (like when a user logs off from their session) because the printer and it's respective port may have to be re-enumerated by the host. If possible, it might be better to do network printers. Also, when installing the printers, especially if you have the same make and model, make sure to LABEL them with unique names, i.e. Printer1, Printer2, etc. Otherwise, the host may have difficulty, more so the user, knowing which printer is 'theirs'.

I have some problems with SSH, here the info that i could get from the appliance: SA-Firewall# Device ssh opened successfully. SSH0: SSH client: IP = '172.17.200.32' interface # = 2 SSH: host key...

What version of software are you running? I have noticed issue with ssh on version 8.2(3) and below.

You can try to remove all ssh access and then add it back. Also you can try zeroizing and regenerating the crypto key.

We have a DHCP problem with our thin client HP T5540, the network interface can't get an ip address fom the DHCP server for 30 seconds so it can't connect to citrix xen serverver for virtualization...

First of all check the configuration of the unit if it's AUTOMATIC IP/DHCP, if all OK you can test by configuring a static IP (use an unused IP in the server's DHCP table) than check the connectivity (ping something), if that works you have a server rule/DHCP or DNS problem

if it's still not working check the cabeling and connectors for connectivity (with a good cable tester) or an other (working) computer.

Good luck!

Hi. I want to set up a server and run dumb terminals (thin clients) off of it. Can anyone give me a basic run-down about how I do that?

You would setup Windows Server. Windows Server 2003 and 2008 Small Business Server comes with a license of Terminal Services Server.

You would first need to setup your Windows Server. Install it according to at least minimum requirements.

Make sure you assign this server the correct role. If this is the primary server and if you intend on hosting dns and dhcp on this machine, then please make sure you are assigning this server these roles.

You will need to create user accounts so that you can log into from your thin clients.

Next you need to run the install for Terminal Server.

Next you need to configure each thin client.

Next try to access each thin client via Remote Desktop as well as the server.

This is the basic run down of the process. If you do not know how to setup a server then you will need to ask that question as this is very detailed. Also you will need to be more detailed in your question as to whether this is a linux based network or a windows based network.

Hope this helps. Please don't forget to give me a good rating as well as your vote.

Wi-Fi Protected Setup Button
If you have client devices, such as wireless adapters, that
support Wi-Fi Protected Setup, then you can
use Wi-Fi Protected Setup to automatically
configure wireless security for your wireless
network(s).

To use Wi-Fi Protected Setup, run the Setup
Wizard, or refer to the “Wireless > Basic Wireless
Settings” section of “Chapter 3: Advanced
Configuration".

Wi-Fi Protected Setup LED (Blue/Amber) It
lights up blue when wireless security is
enabled. The LED flashes blue for two
minutes during Wi-Fi Protected Setup.
The LED lights up amber if there is an error
during the Wi‑Fi Protected Setup process. Make
sure the client device supports Wi‑Fi Protected
Setup. Wait until the LED is off, and then try again.
The LED flashes amber when a Wi‑Fi Protected
Setup session is active, and a second session
begins. The Router supports one session at a
time. Wait until the LED is off before starting the
next Wi-Fi Protected Setup session.

Hello

SOCKS is an Internet protocol that facilitates the routing of network packets between client-server applications via a proxy server. SOCKS performs at Layer 5 of the OSI model - the Session Layer (an intermediate layer between the presentation layer and the transport layer).

Clients behind a firewall may connect to a SOCKS proxy server in order to access external services through the firewall. Such a proxy server controls the eligibility of the client to access the external server and, if the client has eligibility, passes the request on to the server. SOCKS can also be used in the opposite way, allowing the clients outside the firewall ("exterior clients") to connect to servers inside the firewall (internal servers).

SOCKS software

* Kernel SOCKS Bouncer ksb26 (Kernel Socks Bouncer) is a Linux Kernel 2.6.x Loadable Kernel Module that redirects TCP connection (to user-defined target hosts) through socks 4/5 chains.
* SS5 Socks Server is an open-source SOCKS4/SOCKS5 server.
* Dante is an open-source SOCKS4/SOCKS5 implementation with commercial support developed by Inferno Nettverk A/S.
* OpenSSH allows dynamic creation of tunnels, specified via a subset of the SOCKS protocol, supporting the CONNECT command.
* WinSocks is a light-weight SOCKS4/SOCKS5 server developed by Proxy Labs.
* SOcat Multipurpose relay (SOcket CAT): includes socks4, and socks4a functionality (Linux / Mac)
* FreeCap Socksifyer for Windows, any App can run its network traffic transparently via a SOCKS or HTTP proxy.
* Simple Socks Server for Perl - SSS is a Simple SOCKS Server written in perl that implements the SOCKS v5 protocol.
* Sun Java System Web Proxy Server is a caching proxy server running on Solaris, Linux and Windows servers that supports HTtp://S, NSAPI I/O filters, dynamic reconfiguration, SOCKSv5 and reverse proxy.
* BarracudaDrive Web Server - commercial SOCKS HTTP HTTPS tunnel/server, available for Windows, embedded Linux and Mac OS X (PowerPC)
* DeleGate is a multi-purpose application level gateway and proxy server which runs on multiple platforms. Beside SOCKS it also supports HTTP(S), FTP, NNTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, LDAP, Telnet, DNS and many more.
