You did not post the make and model but all wireless routers have encryption settings for communicating with other devices. You need to make sure that one of the types of encryption is enabled. You also need to know that no one can change the settings on the device unless they are physically connected to it with a cable.

We are facing intrusion and serious virus infection problem though we have Symantec Endpoint Protection antivirus programme installed in our system

A antivirus program is not enough to protect your sytem from the dangers ever evolving web nowdays. You also need to have programs for malwares, spywares, root-kits and etc.....to get rid of those nasty dangerous objects too. If your current antivirus is not very effective to protect your system you can always switch to a much better antivirus program ie on the markets today.

Ids

There are several IDS packages available. Search on SourceForge.net to find both executable versions and source code for intrusion detection systems. Some of them give information on how to set up and configure that particular IDS. You can also find honeypots for a different variation of network protection.

I have a sbg 900 motem and router combined how do i secure it for the internet

The router is a hardware firewall so your systems is already protected from intrusions. The internet can only see the routers i.p address and cannot see anything beyond that.If you want to be bulletproof do this as well. Do all your windows updates and keep them current. Get a good internet protection suite and keep it current.Norton Internet 2009 gets great scores from the experts and unlike old Norton products it is not a rescouce hog.It does all Antivirus,Spyware and Malware, root kit protection, anti phishing and tons more.

Network Encryption

Wireless encryption is first and foremost to keep people from accessing your network without your permission. Due to the strength of wireless routers now and days, its like you just turned on a large flood light in home that says "steal my internet connection!"

Yes, it does provide encryption in the transmissions between your computer and the router, but it will not enhance how any web page works or protect your data any better in your computer.

Best suggestion I can make for you is to not only have a wireless password on your router, but to have one one your computer as well. Do not make both passwords match, and do not make them simple or easily guessed. For example, you may want to include numbers and/or combinations of upper and lower case letters (i.e.: FblackDOG78). Furthermore, you want to avoid using common words in your passwords.
