Question about Maytag Dryers

1 Answer

Maytag Centennial Gas Dryer: Only runs in "Air Fluff" setting. If any other setting (Normal Dry / Timed Dry) are used the dryer shuts down immediately. If I force the dryer to run by holding down the start button it will run for a few seconds followed by an odor of burning plastic or similar then shuts down.

Hello Kevin;

My name is Peter. I am a retired field service appliance technician.

When you run your dryer on fluff you are not using heat. The burning smell is when you use normal dry and the lint starts to burn. This will shut your unit down.

You just need a good cleaning. Nothing major. Send me your model number and I will help you.

Testimonial: "Thanks Peter. Model number MGDC200XW0. I have taken the front panel off, opened the top and cleaned the inside of the dryer with a vacuum. There was a layer of lint throughout. Please let me know anything specific I should pay special attention to."

In the back of your dryer is a hot air distribution mafold. Nice dryerthis maifold is xternal not interal like LG models. Pull the dyer out. There are several fasterners holding the manifold on. I am sure after rmoving the manifold at the botton you will find it plugged up. Clean it out.Be careful you may find ear rings and such. The following is a picture of your manifold. Nice talking to you, your problem is solved. Until your next appliance failure.

Our Maytag Centennial Electric dryer is not cycling in auto dry mode but will in timer mode. Any thoughts?

There is a sensor that the clothes have to touch when the drum spins. This sensor measures how wet the clothes are. If you don't have enough of a load in the dryer then the sensor wont detect the dryness. Or it could be a bad sensor or connection or main board.

Gas dryer does not dry in "timed Dry" setting

In some dryer's the control panel relies on a thermistor rather than a CYCLING thermostat to regulate the drum's air temperature by monitoring the component's resistance changes; resistance goes down as temperature increases and up when temperature decreases. Once the drum's air temperature reaches a certain level required to dry clothes, the control panel shuts off the heater. The panel will turn the heater on again and begin another heating cycle when the thermistor indicates that more heat is needed to keep the air temperature constant inside the drum

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.
A failed moisture sensor will affect the dryer run time in the automatic moisture sensing cycle but it will not affect the heating of the dryer or the timed cycle. Which are reflected by the thermostats.

My maytag model mdg9206bww dryer will not shut off on permanent press or delicates, it will dry somewhat but the unit never shuts off, if I put it on timed air fluff, the timer goes and it shuts off...

When was the last time you got your ducts cleaned? If they r full of lint then the moist air never gets outside and stays in the machine hence the clothes never dry. Might not solve the issue but they need to be done as they r also a fire hazard.
