This is caused by stress in the glass which was not properly relieved in the manufacturing process -- in other word, it's a defective piece of tempered glass. The expansion & contraction produced when you cleaned it (subjecting it to changing temperatures) caused the glass to explode.

brute force on the glass shelf.... it was just stuck in place by the cold sticky liquid that had seeped under the edges and bonded the glass and plastic together
