If it even won't fire in a manual mode, when it is dark and you did press the flash button, it could be defect. Be aware that in some Basic Zone modes the flash won't fire. If you did put it in sport and in a few other modes it won't work. So try it in dark and don't forget to switch the flash on.

Check if your camera is on automatic. Then f there is too much light it won't work. To use a flash for fill in, you have to be on a scene mode. Check the manual. If the camera has a flashing light, indicating the flash won't work, you have a serious problem.

Are you sure that the battery cables are tightened?
Could be a ground wire loose...
Might be the coil...

Caroline, you should try to set the camera on "M" and the flash in 2nd curtain flash sync.

Or set flash in ATG wireless IR ETTL Slave modes and pop-up the flash on Canon EOS-70D.

Canon 600ex-rt speedlite won't turn on with new batteries

I was having exactly the same issue with my 600EX-RT. This is what solved the problem for me. With the power turned off. Hold down the 2 clear buttons for approximately 5 seconds, then turn the power on and hopefully, you should have a fully operational Flash.

Are you using those NiMh batteries?

Put in fresh 4AA Energizer Lithium.

My canon 580 EX II stops firing even with new batteries

You must disable the 580EX II form using the 4AA.

4AA must be needed when using hv power pack.

Just let the 4AA use & display the LCD panel.

My flash will not flash. I have put in new batteries. The units responds to TTL and menu commands and switches on perfectly. Even the pilot lamp goes to green, however the bounce flash and fill flash do...

Mine does the same after 10 or 15 flashes. It gives you the impression that its drained the batteries, but I doubt it. I have a feeling its some short-circuit or overheating.

Canon SD1000 Flash won't fire

New batteries are $5 on any auction website. If that's not it, the flash isn't worth the cost to fix if the camera is not under warranty.
