Question about IBM Correcting Selectric II

Our library still regularly uses a Selectric II. Recently we have begun to notice that when trying to capitalize certain letters, the spacing seems to skip a half space ahead. As the next letter will

We opened the top of the typewriter and it does not appear to our untrained eye that anything is amiss. Everything is moving smoothly. There is nothing out of place or sticking. We have been using this typewriter for years without any issues. It is only recently that some of the keys have not been working. And only some of the time.

Try replacing the element (ball) if that doesn't help then it will need a rotate adj. not a job for the untrained.

SOURCE: IBM Selectric II typewriter stuck in correcting position

If you know how to remove the right dust cover (black inside the T/W below the carrier) next to the R. side frame is the correction set up mech. spray some WD40 on the arms especially where they pivot, they should free up.

My IBM Selectric II typewriter skips part of a letter when typing envelopes and going over the overlapped thickness. Even repeating the letter doesn't help.

That particular key is not hitting the paper flush as it should. Carefully try adjusting it in the direction of the miss.

Selectric II Pitch-shift lever won't change from 12 tom 10

If you haven't changed the pitch for a long time the lubricants dry up, if you have some WD40 spray it in the slot inthe margin bar where the L. & R. margin levers ride. Give it a few minites to work.

How to make use of the keys

Well it is rather easy but it does take some practice, some people prefer to adopt a method whereby they assign certain fingers for certain keys, this is done mostly for quick typing. However it does not matter how you type so long as it is comfortable for you. After a short whole you will find it quite exciting. The shift key found on the bottom left hand side of the keyboard is to do Capital letters and the CAPS key is to do THIS ALL CAPITAL LETTERS. The space bar is to make a space between words, just like a type-writer.

Don't worry, you will learn in good time.

IBM Selectric II Will type letters, but will

Several possible causes. Needs lubrication most commonly. Sometimes the velocity cable is hung up on the left side and under the carriage. remove the ribbon and shine a light down on the left side and look for a cable hung up on the pulley, make a hook with a paper clip and lift the cable up and past the pulley

IBM Selectric II

The return clutch torque limiter is off or broken. If you take the right dust cover off it is on the turning hub around the middle of the typewriter. a small spring about 1.25 inches long with a hook on the end. I have been fixing these for 35 years. good luck. Lawrence

Correcting IBM Selectric II Typewritter correcton ribbon won't engage

Selectric I and II type elements are identical (88 char) where Selectric III uses a different element (96 char). The 88 character element will have white lettering and the 96 character element will have yellow. Directly underneath the lift-up tab to remove the element will be a 3-digit number. That's the last 3 digits of the element's part number, which will be preceeded by 1167 for 88 character, or 1352 or 96 character. For example, if you have a '052" stamped on the element, and it's an 88 character style, the P/N will be 1167052.

The correcting mechanism is an intricate additional function of the backspace function. To test it/adjust it/or repair it requires the machine be hand-cycled using a hand cycle wheel which is screwed into the right hand side operational shaft. It's unlikely that an un-trained party would be successful repairing this..
