Pressure in red is not good - evacuate building.
it must be heating and output is blocked otherwise pressure would not rise.
OR input pressure is too high and pressure is disabling heat.

The heating element continues to heat even after the hot water tap is turned off thus popping the thermal switch. The red light is off on front of unit but you can hear the water heating. Any ideas?

check the pressure control that switches the element on or off
if it is faulty then it switches on when the tap is turned on dropping the pressure but it will not recognize that the increase in pressure when the tap is turned off so it keeps heating the water.

Heating and hot water only warm. I'turned dials up and altered thermostat but nothing helps and pressure dial keeps going into red HELP

Check your dip tube.

the higher up the dip tube is broken, the colder the water will be.

Knowing the make and model of heater will help.

Vailant ecotec plus 837 - Water pressure and temp is too high

Pressure inside the tank will rise along with the water temperature. As the water inside cools the pressure will wane until the heating element turns on and reheats the water with a subsequent rise in pressure. Running the hot water at the same time will draw heat energy from the boiler and lower the internal temp and pressure as well.

Currently have leaking expansion tank and have shut off main water to minimize water in basement (also have bucket under leak). Have forced hot water for heating house if have main water off can we keep...

HI sorry its shot, they go every now &then. You can run it like you say temporary BUT the boiler needs low pressure to force heat @10 or 12 p.s.i. This pressure will leak out of the hole and you eventaully loose heat & get noise. If you got a pinhole leak in tank. With the main off.Slow it down with duct tape or a rag if you can and leave water on.
