Is the Mac dead when you plug in power? If possible, what is your model identifier? Are you near an Apple Store? If so, the best option is to take it in. It will be free to give you an estimate. I am asking about the model identifier, since I have replaced my MacBook Pro battery, and that will determine which battery to buy. How to find model identifier?

Click on the Apple menu bar item in far upper left corner,
Click About This Mac.
Click System Report button.

It should be on the second line.
It will read something like "MacBookPro4,1" or "MacBookPro5,1" from your description above, but no time indicated. The 4,1 mode means "Early 2008" and 5,1 means "Late 2008" Note this model id and the dates, for correct battery replacement. I recommend "Other World Computing" at They have the best batteries as far as I can tell, and hold up a littler better than the batteries from Apple.

Not turning on

Look on the underside of your Mac and press the button that tells how much life is left in your battery (it has 4 green LED indicators). If none of them light up, your battery may be dead/not functioning.
Your memory/RAM might have gone bad. Has the memory/RAM been upgraded? If so, replace it with the original memory that you replaced. If you only have the factory memory in it, then it might be something else.

Mac book pro 13" won't start

check the power, battery, PRAM. Beeps and lights indicate errors. Known good power and nothing means the board is likely dead.

I can see a green line on my mac book pro screen

First, reboot the computer and see if it still comes up after that.

If the green line persists, plug your macbook into another display- does the green line show up there as well? If it does, the problem is with the graphics unit. If not, it's a screen issue.

This may indicate that your battery is going bad and not holding a charge. Try inserting a different battery and see if the light stays green.
