Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I have a Smith Corona Coronet XL electric typewriter. When turned, on the carriage immediately goes all the way to the right and makes loud clicking noises like it is trying to advance. It does not stop until turned off and continues when turned on again. How do I fix this?

Check the switch close to the rail on the right side. It tells it has gone to far. And to return. Maybe broken or not functioning.

Check the switch close to the rail on the right side. It tells it has gone to far. And to return. Maybe broken or not functioning. The rail is what the carrier head rides on or it could be a belt or cable..lower right down towards the bottom.

SOURCE: Smith Corona 235 DLE doesn't advance

Does the platen move or does the paper not advance? Check the paper release lever to make sure the feed wheels are snapped in place. If the platen does not move something in the paper feed motor area.

SOURCE: Need owners manual:

I have been unable to find a site where you can download a Smith Corona typewriter manual. However, you can try going to Will Repair Service. They carry manuals of every Smith Corona typewriter ever made, and you should be able to find a manual for your particular typewriter there. I find them to be a very helpful and trustworthy typewriter shop.

Best of luck to you! :-)

My Smith-Corona Coronet electric typewriter will not type capital letters.

It sounds like it needs a service, the locking mechanism is not working, way up the cost of a service vs the price of a new one most people use Digital Devices these days.

Why does paper not advance to next line when carriage returns?

There might be a setting for how many lines it moves when the carriage gets to the end. It is mechanical so you'll see it!

I have a Sterling Cartridge Smith-Corona typewriter and it shakes really bad when I turn the on switch, what is the problem?

It could be the machine is trying to return but is not successful. Help the carriage by hand up against the left margin, and see if this helps. Sometimes the centrifugal clutches on the motor need replaced, and sometimes the belts can cause this. Either way, you will probably not be able to fix it yourself.
