    Thanks, Steve...

You were spot on but, unfortunately, too ($320) late! I had a local marine electronics guy look at it. He took both my display and the course computer to his shop and plugged them into a system he had that was working. My components worked fine. So, it appeared to be a power problem. But it was more insidious than just that. After reinstalling on my boat (with tightened connections), it worked...briefly. It turned out that the ground wire (not the connections) was faulty. Only when the entire wire was replaced did it work. I'm still at the dock and will be here until April 1, so that will be the "acid test" but I turn it on and off frequently and it always lights up and the rudder responds when I "change course".

    Thanks for your response, though.

Hi John

Boy, you're up against it on this one. The AP16 is a pretty old unit for sure. Here's the link to your owners manual.

I've come across one instance in my experience where although there was enough power showing to the control head, because of corrosion and broken wire strands, there simply was too much voltage drop and not enough current flow for the unit to function when it was turned on. After cutting back/fixing the soldered connections and reconnecting the cable, the unit was good to go.

I hope this information is able to help you out.
Good luck.

Turn on normally, go to press auto.... nothing

Hi Ty
This sounds to me like a cabling problem. There is enough "horsepower" to turn the unit on, but the increased current required to actually run the thing isn't as robust as it needs to be.

I would start by checking the connections at the panel or battery. Make sure these are absolutely pristine. (i.e. Clean and tight) Pay particular attention to the terminals and/or crimp connectors, whichever are used. It doesn't take much corrosion here to render the autopilot inoperable. Let me know how you make out.

Why does my simrad ap16 say initializing and doesn't do anything else?

The fact that initialization cannot complete the task at hand is an indicator the device is not capable of accepting new instructions, the circuit prevents reestablishing current instructions from making changes to the unit, or you may need to pay for services to unlock various codes.

Hi I have a1988 chevy k1500 died changed coil dist wire from coil to dist have fuel no spark any ideas thanks

remove dist cap and rotor, under the rotor there is a control module (its about 1/4" tall, 1" wide, and 2-2 1/2" long) remove the module and take it to a parts store and have it tested. If its bad replace it and put dist back together and try starting it again. if thats not it then have coil check. Oh ya before you take anything apart disconect battery.

Simrad ac10 current overload

Normally this is the electric motor causing this problem. Just went on a call and had the same thing. Checked voltage coming from the AC unit to the motor and had 12 vdc then put a new one in it's place and it solved the problem. You don't have to change the pump portion, just change the motor itself. Indeed you will have fluid leaking but many times it's better than plumbing in a new pump.

GPS/Fishfinder keeps dropping and restarting

Do a software upgrade to the CE33 unit and then a master reset by unplugging the power cable , then press and hold PWR and CLR buttoms while plugging back the power cable. Wait a couple of second while the software reloads and should run smooth....
NOTICE: All the previous data as routes, waypoints, etc that you had will be lost by the master reset.
