Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+
Wiggled sockets and sometimes worked. Now it does not. Aside from this problem (no lights), the GDO works fine.
I have noticed on my most used opener that one of the bulbs center pin is corroding away and intermittently worked. Try to clean up the connection in the bulb base after making sure power is off at the breaker. Then apply liberal amounts of bulb grease (which can be found at any auto parts store) in socket threads before screwing new bulb in. So far that solved my problem, maybe yours too.

The above comment about the switch on the wall, this switch won't keep the light from coming on when the door is operated. If the bulbs are good then take them out and unplug you opener. In the bottom of the socket is a metal tab put your finger in and lift the tab up a little bit. Then plug it back in and try the bulbs. Sometimes the new bulbs like the CF's won't seat deep enough into the socket.

There may be a switch up by the lights, it may just not be set to turn on when the door opens. Also I found on mine, the opener attached to the wall in the garage has a button that turns the lights on and off.

Make sure you are using standard 60 watt bulbs. Some newer type bulbs are causing a problem. If you have a multimeter and are handy it should be no problem to check for 110 volts at the socket and trace the wiring back to the circuit board. There may be burnt or missing traces on the board itself. The click you hear is the relay that controls the lights so you know that is working but there is always the possibility the points are bad.

It's the gear drive. There are kits online for about $40, if you're semi-handy you can replace it yourself. Search for liftmaster replacement parts.

SOURCE: Liftmaster Keypad problem
First thing to do is make sure it has a good battery installed. If this doesn't take care of the problem then the keypad is going bad and needs to be replaced. It is important that you get the same keypad as there are others out there that look the same but will not work.
