SOURCE: how to find timing when installing timing belt to

Personally, I use a paint stick to mark the original belt location. Then I take the belt off and transfer the marks to the new belt. Be sure to put a new water pump in and also a new spring on the tensioner.

If you already took the beloff, then there are actually timing marks. I forget where the mark on the crank is, but it should be slightly obvious. The mark on the gear lines up with a mark on the oil pump. The camshaft gears each have 2 marks. On the front you use the one with the 'e' and the 'I' on the back. The notches have to point at eachother parallel to the cylinder head.

Good luck...

How do you replace the water pump on a 1992 Mazda Protege?

Hi:

The water pump is driven by the timing belt, which is on the passenger side of your engine. You would need to remvoe all belts, and then the timing belt cover, and the timing belt to change your water pump.

WHEN DO YOU CHANGE THE TIMING BELT IN A 2002 MAZDA PROTEGE.?

I have an 02 Protege5 which is pretty much the same engine. I changed mine at 105000 km's. Generally, you do it at about the 100000 km (62000 mile) mark. However, I know of others who pushed their cars to 150000 kms. Good news is that I believe that the Protege uses a non-interference engine (means the valves wont crash into the pistons if the timing belt breaks). However, you should double check this with your local Mazda dealership. Dont take my opinion for word.

How much should I reasonably pay to replace the Timing belt in my 2002 Mazda Protege 5?

replacement of timing belt $350-$500. aftermarket shops will try to sell you a package containg a belt, water pump, and tensioner pulley. the dealer will just replace the belt, they might recommend to replace the water pump if there are alot of miles on the car, they will also inspect the pulley for wear.
