try to press the reset button on the left side next to the usb port with a small paper clip or toothpick and see what happens and see if it did is firmware update,if not do it over and the unit plugged in with powersupply and the usb and leave it alone and let it reset a few times until it says to unplug from the usb .for the sd card make sure is a flash sd card.i have a mastreo 4000 with a 2gb sd flashcard and it has no problem.theses units has unlimited amount of any size of gb sd flash card.let me know what happens.

Did you hear a beep when SD card is inserted? Did you also try to hard reset the unit using the On/Off switch located at the bottom of the unit? Try with another SD card and see if the SD option is selectabe. If all have tried I suggest you to exchange for another unit. HTH.

SOURCE: TomTom One series 30 won't reset
It sounds like you have lost the operating system or the flash memory card has gone bad. Make sure your unit is fully charged and try again. Then connect your device to your computer. If it comes up in my computer right click the drive and check properties to see how much space is availiable on the drive. If it says 0 the flash has gone bad, I have a 20 series tt that this happened to. My solution was to insert a sd card (at least 2 gb.) into the sd card slot found under the sticker no sd card requaired on the bottom of the tt. TT home then installed the operating system but the downside is if you have not made a backup od your tt you will have to buy new maps (not cheap).
Hope this helps

disconnect it from power, then turn it on and after its done booting, use a paper clip and insert it in the tiny hole on the left side (thats the rest) and depress the switch gently...it should now start to reboot, after its done, plug in the charger again....if you still have a problem, let me know by replying to this post.
