Question about Music

Open Question

I have a late 70s model 400 Acoustic bass head, and just recently I had this problem of a terrible scratchy noise coming from the bass knob. So I sprayed the inside of all the pots really well with CRC electronic contact spray and put the amp back together. When I tried it out I was thrilled to find that the scratchiness is completely eliminated however it seems now it is not producing nearly as much volume. Any thoughts on what may have caused this and or how to fix?

Oh great... WORSE thing you can do is to spray in Deoxit or Blue shower contact cleaner inot pots or faders!!!! It destroys the lube on the resistance element !!! The ONLY place to use those products is on metal switch contacts.

You have ONE chance to try and restore it without replacing it...

Go to Home Depot and in the electrical dept find a can of CRC226 (about $2.70 Bluish can) Use ONLY this product CRC226 as there are other CRC products there that are NOT applicable to this problem...

Now with the spout flush this down where the other cleaner had been put and work the control... Worse case is if you can't get enough into it you might have to open the case to get at a place you can spray into the pot where the lead wires go into it...

I use CRC226 to restore volume and gain pots in many guitar amps that become noisy. Usually I do it from inside the amps where I can get to the slot where the leads go into the pot. The product is for electrical stuff and is a water displacer but not gunky like WD40... never use that product in controls or switches... it is essentially fish oil. CRC226 is also goo to protect tools from rust.

I hope you can fix your unit without replacing the pot...

First though, flood a bunch in and then TURN the keyboard upside down so the CRC226 floods over the resistance element inside the control and work the control.

In case you need to replace the pot here is the info and part number from Roland.:

Here is an Avnet catalog page but they only do large orders of 1200 which is 1199 more than you need.

The pot is a Res POT 10K Ohm 20% 1/20W 6mm Pin Snap-In It will be a "B" taper audio type.

SOURCE: my mg 100fx has a scratchy pot in the master

What did you spray it with? I hope NOT Deoxit or Blue shower as those wreck the pots by removing the lube.

Use CRC226 available in the electrical dept at Home Depot. Use the plastic tube by bending it so it can spray upward into the slot where the leads that solder into the board go into the metal can.

Spray a little in and work the pot... then try a little more and see if it improves the situation. If it does, treat all the pots the same. ALSO look for broken solder where the pot wires solder to the circuit board..

I tune my guitars at 400 using a clip on tuner, which I believe is concert pitch I've recently bought a 5 string blue grass banjo .I set tuner to c mode to tune banjo is this correct

Actually, concert pitch is A=440 rather than A=400. Normally a 5 string banjo is tuned G (octave) D G B D though many variations exist.

Relay?? I've never seen a guitar or bass amp with "speaker protection relays"...usually they're either on or off. Check the simple stuff speaker cable from head to cabinet and/or the input cable from bass to the amp good? Check the "Direct Out" for a line level signal (must be connected to a PA or other amplifier) as this is your preamp out signal. Also, plug a shielded cable from "Effects Send" to "Effects Return"...this will verify "effects" loop issues if any. Lastly, vibration test...use a clenched fist across the top, sides and bottom of wood cabinet to lightly "jar" the internal circuits. If it starts working even for an instant, I would suspect intermittent connection inside.

Seems to be a noisy fan on mb4210 combo

Could very well be the fan. The motors can cause interference. There may be a solution to get rid of the noise. Some copper shielding tape may help. You could rule out it being a microphonic preamp tube by turning the amp on as normal and tapping the tubes with something non-conductive. If you hear the tapping noise coming thru the speakers while doing this to a particular tube, replace it. With power tubes, the tops of them turn white on the top when they become microphonic, along with plenty background noise.
