That is the only way to add coolant! Try spraying a freeing agent like WD40 on it!

My 2006 Caravan temperature gauge goes to red - engine is not overheating. Kick it into a lower gear (automatic trans) and the gauge comes back down. Is it likely the coolant sensor?

Could be.. is the system FULL? Air in it can cause some odd things. When engine and coolant are COLD (as in after sitting over night), open the radiator cap. Top off the overflow res with a 50/50 antifreeze / water mixture to HOT mark. Start engine, turn heat to hot and fan to high. Top off RADIATOR with same 50/50 mixture slowly & gradually. As the coolant circulates, it should bring any AIR trapped in the system (from heater core & engine block) to the radiator where you can replace it with the 50/50 mix. Once the coolant is HOT and stays level - about an inch under the opening, close the radiator. Monitor the overflow res and add as needed. Good luck!

Why would i be going through so much coolant without a leak

Check your oil. There probably is coolant in it from a head leak. Also look at the exhaust . Should not be white and smoky. There is a leak somewhere.

How to fix oil in the reservoir

If you have oil in your coolant res. Its not a good sign. This means you have a blown head gasket. The part is quite cheap compared to the labour involved in taking the top of the motor apart. I would try flushing the coolant and with the new coolant add a bottle of head gasket repair. There are several different kinds, some are even industrial grade. It has saved me a couple times from huge mechanic bills. If this doesnt work then u may need to replace that gasket.

93 GMC Safari overheating. This happened spontaneously. Runs hot very quickly when I drive it. There is antifreeze in both radiator and overflow res, overflow res fills up more after driving a bit. ...

It would appear your thermostat is stuck in the closed position , find where it is on your engine, drain coolant and remove thermostat housing and stat, replace housing(liquid gasket OK) and coolant. now run engine, turn heater controls to hot leaving filler cap off, top up any water to max and replace cap now warm up to temp until fan comes on. if all ok replace thermostat with a new one and new gasket, you could also flush the sytem out at the same time with a hose pipe by loosening one of coolent pipes and flush radiator.

There should be a fill level mark and yes you need to put in immediately, run the car until it reaches operating temp, then see where the level is after you shut it off.

Adding antifreeze to 2003 dodge dakota sxt

normaly you add to the plastic res , but lets make sure its full , so when it is cold the engine then open the radiator cap the metal one slowly and first top it off then close cap all the way and fill plastic res to the cold fill line. but usualy you just make sure the plastic tank is either full to the hot line or cold line , which is when the engine is hot or cold. but it is also good to check both .
